High enough mental stats Phex? I personally have seen a correlation with mental stats and the ability to walk into the NPCs.

So far DSC on average and RCP on poor. Others met Brutus x3 with less they told me. Its totally luck-based then?! I go on working on DSC to be able to learn Canter incase i get the story. If your thesis is right Zedoma, this may match one day :-)

This is only my second chocobo ever, but I got all 4 Story KIs by Day 35. My first chocobo never got any. Something I did: I watched my egg 610 times in the first 4 days. (The guide mentions 150) ...and I make sure to deplete it's HP every day in a specific way. I deplete it's HP by doing the task for the stat I want, like carrying packages for STR/END (I forget which). This results the bird having some HP left, but not enough to do anything, besides Watch Over Chocobo about a few times, until it's HP Bar is depleted. As a result, my affection levels have all ways been very high, "Regards you as a parent", every day etc.
Is this why I got all 4 KIs? ...Maybe? I have no idea. So, again, this is just my anecdotal experience.

Just luck maybe, did the exact same thing, message instead of package, watch and care this bird that I have always been a parent, day 41 now, and not met Brutus once. Met the taru girl 3 times in a row though. DSC had been 134 since at least day 30, that when I swap to message. RCP was always low, sub 40, just starting to raise that using chocobuck item. But nothing I read (or remember) about RCP and stories.
So luck imo. Also the guide does say past 64 (?!?) you won’t lvl stat and swap to basic care, still leaves you 60 something days for the story

Oh really? So you can't learn a story after Day 64? Is that correct?
By Felgarr 2026-04-22 11:15:26
I just beat the Dream Race on my 4th attempt and my chocobo is on Day 55 of it's raising.
My bird is First Class/First Class/Better than Average/Poor for STR/END/DSC/RCP and has both Gallop and Cantor.

People are price gouging.... R Chocotrain STR's are 1m now...
It's making it rather difficult
I'm at the point where I did all my DSC up to S, had RCP up to 120 but now delivering letters to train STR has dropped RCP down to ~70 already, but my STR is up to 150.
I feel like I should keep delivering letters until STR maxxes out, then act in plays to fix RCP... then Fix STR again from the play acting with Chocotrains? It feels like an awkward give and take at this point. I'm at like day 53 iirc

If you're planning to cap str, I would do that asap and keep it that way. I doubt it will happen in 10 days from care plans but its significant progress. STR is probably the most importsnt to stst for getting your own chocobucks to then fix whatever stats you still need.

Chocotrains for 200k to 300k were dumb. Could do 48 runs and spend around 680k to do the races (plus time) to have enough for 2 chocotrains. Throw in a C2 or C1 win and maybe close to 3 chocotrains. 1M is fair for the amount of time invested, or just wait it out and spend an extra month waiting for stats.

Watching the egg doesn't do anything any more, you start at max affection. That's out of date information.
You get KIs by running into NPCs on walks, which Zed and I think is related to DSC (and maybe RCP) stats, bird that are focusing physical ones seem to rarely run into them, while mental ones see them often. Third encounter with each of the four gets you four of the possible books. Another comes from winning three "Race against others" which you unlock after meeting the NPC on a medium walk. Last one is from doing the missing chocobo chick sidequest with the NPC.
Oh really? So you can't learn a story after Day 64? Is that correct?
I just finished a bird where I learned a story long after 64 due to terrible luck getting Brutus to show up, so yes, you can.

It's effectively impossible to max more than two stats without using trains due to the care plans removing stats from opposing stats almost as fast as you gain them. The general most efficient raising is to pick a double plan to raise up two stats while keeping the others at 0, switch to a single for one of the two when you hit the stopping point for the other, then chocotrain the other one or two stats to where you want it.
Chocotrains for 200k to 300k were dumb. Could do 48 runs and spend around 680k to do the races (plus time) to have enough for 2 chocotrains. It's entirely an argument for time and gil. If you're willing to only do like 8 free runs a day, you can earn each chocotrain for like 30k, but it will be slow. If you do 24 a day, it still only costs you about 100k in gil worth of runs to get a chocotrain, which is about what they typically were sold for on Bahamut. Doing more runs than that starts getting really expensive really fast, to the point where it costs 100k gil per 3-5 chocobucks so you're spending millions each.

What is your mental stats for the bird at? As mentioned, DSC seems to affect running into NPCs more often at least, but long walks are kind of shitty because you have two different NPCs you coinflip on every time. I ended up running into the taru like 20+ total times before I got my third Brutus, it was aggravating.

While I do have a dirty handkerchief, I do remember reading somewhere that you have to try each zone (à la limbus) to get it (implying the item is in 1 out of 3 area and not the others). Find mine on the medium walk. So cycle it (or luck and irrelevance worked).

I'll give it a shot, thank you!
edit: 0/7 on Long Walk -> 0/1 on Short Walk -> 1/1 on Mid Walk. Thia was totally correct, thank you so much!

I'm in the process of planning out my next Chocobo but I'm hoping some people have some insight.
While looking up Chocobo Attributes I noticed something that I've never seen before. It mentions that besides a stat minimum, you also likely need to be at least 45 days old to learn an ability. Has anyone had any luck getting your chocobo to learn an abilities before 45? This excludes any that were born with learned abilities.
I'm wondering how realistic it is to try and get all three alternate attributes to make my Chocobo look super unique.

Yes, I learned Gallop on Day 31 and Cantor at 41.
Fun fact: I got a story KI on the day my bird hatched.

Not possible but I wish it was.
To your previous question, I have birds that have learned abilities as early as day 21. The Bright and Focused buff helps learn abilities when DSC is in the lower amounts early on in raising.

Cerberus.Echohawk said: »This is what I've been doing to raise new birds. Imo the outcome seems fairly ideal and reasonable without previously accumulated bucks. My old chocos have max str and basically nothing else. Thry seem to be ok at farming bucks, so you may be able to start accumulating bucks with your old bird. Tbh idk anything about digging and I dont plan on learning anything for hopefully another 12-15 years.
There's also some info on the "demystifying food" thread which is where this came from
Salads are +0 to DSC/RCP and so are Carrots. The reason I know this is because I attempted to raise a chocobo with 96 in STR/END/DSC by day 29 in order obtain all 3 of the physical characteristics like the Noble chocobo mount.
We are lucky that Ivaar's chococard addon exists and it removes all the guesswork and also all of the information from past guides are about the system before the 2016 rework.
I recommend the first bird for anyone new to chocobos be raised like this:
Abilities to obtain: Gallop & Canter
Day 1-5 Basic Care
Day 6-20 Listen to Music
Day 21-30 Exhibit to the Public
Day 31-64 Delivering Messages (If STR caps early switch to Digging for Treasure)
Day 65+ Basic Care (Buying time to purchase/farm chocobucks to increase END to 4-34 and RCP back to 96-128 before day 120 using R: tokens)
254 4 254 128
Once this bird is made all the rest come much easier.
I've been doing this and it's going great so far. Day 39 currently, working on building str up. I've learned both abilities and I'm now just kind of... checking in on the chocobo daily.
Is there any reason not to spam Compete Against Others to build STR even faster, though? The OP says it raises STR.

I am a big proponent of not wasting energy unless trying to obtain a story KI or cure a negative condition. My own evidence supports that leaving a chocobo at 0 energy each day introduced more negative conditions/ plan failures the following days and provided no bonus to stats.
You can test it yourself, Carrying Packages is between +6 - +10 per day so grab some Hi-chocolixirs and spam 3-4 Compete per energy bar, assuming no Full of Energy or Bursting with Vitality condition and see if you noticed extra STR.
This guide is a compilation of things I've learned over the course of researching Chocobos. Many insights were gained through FFXIclopedia, JPWiki, and my own personal experiences. This guide is a work in progress, and should be treated as such. I will do my best to update the sections regularly.
Since this guide is a remake, you may view the old thread here.
Last Major Update: 8/24/2012
Last Minor Update: 7/22/2025
There’s a lot of new discoveries and I haven’t learned it all yet. Also all of the images I posted in the before times are broken, and probably not worth replacing because they’ll just break again in another 10 years. I’ll try to think of an alternative.
What kind of Chocobo?
Before you continue reading this guide, you must ask yourself what kind of chocobo do you want?
Racer
A Racing Chocobo is what's going to net you the coveted chocobo pullus torque and Crystal Stakes gold cup. It also has the potential to earn you ~100k a day, and more if you place successful bets on your bird. However, I must warn you that these chocobos are very expensive to raise properly, and require a lot of care.
Digger
These chocobos are adept at finding things in the ground all over Vana'diel. It's classified as a craft, and as thus must be treated as such. It will cost a decent chunk of gil to raise your digging skill to max level, and there's a cap to how much you can dig per RL day(and how much you can dig in an area per game day) making the process very tedious. You can have the greatest digger in the world, but if you don't have the digging skill to back it up, you're not going to get very far.
Summonable Mount
These chocobos sole purpose in life is to make it easier for you to get around. Because they don't require much in the way of expenses, they're very easy to raise. Note that you can use any of the aforementioned chocobos as a suitable mount, but their top speed and riding duration depends on STR and END stats, and the abilities Gallop and Canter. Keep in mind your chocobo will only be as fast as a rental, unfortunately, never faster.
Breeder
These chocobos are created with the intent to have parents to create a whole generation of chocobos. They will be the color you desire, and have very high receptivity to pass on the traits you wish for your future chocobos. I find these useful only if you're having a hard time finding people on your server with C+ Receptivity, with the Color/Abilities you wish your future chocobos to possess.
