Random Question thread (FFXI related)

Might be kinda dumb question, but a bit tired and realizing the wording on the BG wiki is weird.
On Box Step and Armor Break and other Defense down pages, it starts with:
DEFENSE DOWN EFFECTS DO NO STACK!
Then goes onto say that Defense Down, Box Step, Dia, and Geo-Frailty all stack.
Then goes onto say that the different kinds of defense downs that share the Defense Down spot do not stack and overwrite each other by tier priority.
I think the verbiage could stand to change. Like it should probably start with the second sentence about what effects stack. Then go with the all caps part. Then explain the defense down tiers/acid bolts etc.
Why is it like that on every page? It's got me second guessing my own knowledge lol.

Also wondering:
If you do stack all of the defense downs:
Frailty, A Break/Ageha/Angon etc, Box Step, and Dia III...
Does the monster's defense effectively become 1?
Or is it probably just the whole multiplicative rather than additive?
Say it has 1000 defense.
You whop a GEO resisted Bolstered Frailty on it for -40%
It's at 600 defense now. Then you Dia III it.
Now it's at 480ish, right? Then you Armor Break it.
Now it's 360ish?
Build Box Step on DNC to 10, and it's down to... Like 277?

Afaik no one has found an overall min other than 1 for defense. You are also doing the math slightly wrong in that all of them apply to the original defense and not incrementally, e.g. Armor Break always takes off 250 if the monster has 1000 def
As far as bgwiki wording, in this case it is caused by ambiguity between the status called Defense Down and the practical effect of lowering defense. Maybe it should be something more like "ways to reduce defense stack, but only one Defense Down effect can be active at once." It is a wiki, though, so any of us could change it.

Pretty sure he understood it and asked about what you said he did wrong in his math. He asked if different sources of def down are applied to orginal def or incrementally like you described. They are applied to orginal or in his words they are additive to each other, then applied do def.

Regarding the No Effect message, was that message on a player character? Or a trust/pet? It was on a player character, not trusts. Happened in sortie, so no vorseals, also if I check my sets I most likely didn't wear any "occasionally absorbs" or "annuls" - "magic damage taken" gear like warders charm, shadow and archon ring at the time.
Now that I think of it, could be possible that It cought me in sanguine blade precast set which has archon ring in it, although I doubt slimy proposal does enough damage to trigger the "Severe magic damage" condition.

I don't think Slimy Proposal does damage at all to begin with. And Shadow/Archon ring only work on dmg, and reduce the dmg to 0 when proc'd. So they couldn't cause a "No effect" message either. Likewise, absorb damage effects cannot proc on non-damaging enfeeble. They can absorb the damage portion of damaging attacks with additional effect debuffs, but even in that case they do not prevent the debuff even if absorb procs.
If the occasionally nullifies dmg vorseal could do this(and I dunno for certain if it can proc on non-damaging attacks) then Srivatsa might also be able to. The two are similar in their mechanics and weird log messages.
Anyway, if you were in sortie(thus no vorseals) and the affected player wasn't wearing Srivatsa(And again, I'm not even sure Srivatsa could do that either..), then.. well. I have no idea what the cause might have been.

FWIW, you get similar "no effect" messages when trying to land certain macc-only spells on targets, eg any of the absorb tier spells. "No effect" is equivalent to "the spell landed but did not have an effect".
Meaning, in the case of absorbs, the target's meva was not enough to outright avoid it (evade), it did not get resisted by anything else either, but was enough so it had no effect (absorb was for 0).
In the case of charm, I see those no effect messages a lot even with no other debuffs that would take precedence.
I always took it to mean the spell/tp move passed through meva and resist tier checks but failed at the last check, whether the effect lands or not.
It might be more common for debuffs that do not have a low duration threshold, eg I don't remember charm ever landing for 1-2sec like sleep or stun sometimes do, it's either half duration or full.
Absorbs are the same, they don't have a lower tier beyond half resist, it's either full or a half resist.

If you had no nullifies/annuls gear my next thought would be you had a higher rank Dia or Bio on and prevented Slimy Proposal's Dia from applying which stopped the charm.

So I'm trying to get a mimeo stone and get to the cradle of rebirth with it but it seems impossible to find a 'luminant' point that is within a reasonable distance to the start of the mountain climb at K9. Is there more than one way to enter the climb? This miasma maze is driving me insane.
Edit: As an example I found a luminant. Used Flee as soon as I touched it (with +15second boost) and booked back the shortest way I found to the start point and flee had worn off just before I got there and the stone faded once. 18% movement speed and moving as fast as I could and it still broke like 1.5 mins before I got to the top. If there's a better reward for getting to the top before it fades even one time there has to be a faster way I am missing.

It's possible to get 0 fades, but depends on some RNG with luminant placement and miasma timing

Curious if The Ulbuka HELM set does the same thing in Ulbuka areas as the Field/Worker set does in original areas? The difference in wording with 'improves skill' vs 'improves results' has me wondering.

Hidden effects largely disappeared before 75 era was even over. They wanted to be more transparent with those things, old post from like 2006.
Aside from like Demersal Degen having atypical damage there's nothing (not reskinned) over 75 with hidden effects. A handful of latent effect UNM items reskinned from 75 era items. And onca suit letting you eat raw fish...

The double and triple damage procs on Relics and Primes are hidden. Kind of a carry forward for relics. But not mentioned in either weapons' text.
Same thing goes for the hidden WS dmg up on associated WS for REMAs.
Duban, the prime shield, doesn't have text saying it's got unique block rate.
Some items like Carmine Cuisses still have the hidden affinities. There's some other highly sought after accessories I remember having hidden affinities that got some PLDs in trouble with intimidates.

Not actually sure the carmine set carried it's dragon affinity forward with it's reskin (if they do, it's still just a reskin effect, nothing new)
The weapons/shields (no shield states it's size) are just carried forward from their original pieces

So I have this annoying thing that happens a lot. I play on KB using WASD for movement and the arrow keys for the camera (shift+arrow keys during combat for camera). Frequently while moving around monsters while fighting and adjusting the camera I will inevitable move the cursor from 'Switch target' down to 'magic' and hit the right arrow at some point to expand the menu. I often don't notice right away until I'm pressing a macro to weaponskill which doesn't work until I close the expanded menu. Is there any solution for this? It drives me nuts lol.

Absolutely. Inventory+2. (But some people are worth talking to in game, of course).

I don't have a link, but I know that 2048 entities can exist in a zone. I want to say 50% are players and 50% are NPCs/server-side entities. So, that would mean you could technically have an empty zone with no players but ~1024 chests? ....realistically, it's probably lower than this. I would be curious to know if there is a hard cap, though.

It's 80 chests per zone from what I remember, but you could certainly use Nynja's approach to verify.

There are different packets to dynamically spawn NPCs in a seperate range of indexes. As far as the chests are concerned, your approach is fine though. SE doesn't use dynamically spawned NPCs for a whole lot of things, though some private servers do.
Pretty sure the escorted quasilumins in sea are all dynamically spawned.

010221BF would be index 1BF, my mission bot detects it in the range of 0x700 to 0x8FF and works fine [this range is used for dynamically spawned entities, normal npcs are in 0x000 to 0x3FF)
i'm not sure offhand why it's seperated in the dats, but i don't think it's related to the escort quest

I've seen sortie boxes pop that weren't target able for a minute+, had to distance myself and engage a random enemy befor it became targetable again.
I've seen odyssey autotarget pick a new mob after a mob dies and it's logged on and focused but it's not the actual mob I'm engaged with (random mob in a crowds name turns red if you happen to run by the correct one) - genius if you have a whole camp on you but your char doesn't start attacking and therefor trusts don't start healing.
I've seen trusts beeing called but instead of their names and HP bars beeing displayed in the bottom right they are displayed as if they were in a entirely different zone. I've seen myself "engaging" on my own trusts befor, charm was not involved.

Are there any instances where you would want to cancel raise?
Lately I catch myself canceling it a lot by accident when I'm trying to drop sneak during odyssey box runs.
