I know you’re really awesome at FFXI, but it’s extremely impressive that you can take half an hour to do a trial that requires 8 kills of mobs that only show up in three zones and have an hour respawn. I guess you’re just better than me.

Not sure if you're disingenuous or stupid, let's find out!

If your friend asks you to help them move a couch and it takes 5 minutes, then a month later they ask you to hang a TV on the wall which also takes 5 minutes, would you say "I spent a month helping my friend hang 1 TV and move 1 couch!"?

If it takes 5 minutes per pop, then 8 pops would take 40 minutes, not 2 hours because you had to wait for the mob to respawn.

Are you asking people to help you pop a single VWNM once every month? I assume you're going to want to finish your Empy trials a bit sooner, yeah?

So you're probably going to run into a situation of popping a few NMs, then needing to wait until respawn timers are up, then pop a few more, repeat.

And in between, unless you're just continuously doing other things with the same person and interrupting that whenever the VWNMs are back up, there is time involved in arranging to go out ("hey, you free now?" "no, but I will be in 30 minutes"), stopping what you're doing to change jobs and go out, etc.

I wouldn't say the required time is the full time between the time/date of starting pop #1 to the time/date of finishing pop #20 on your 3 Empy VWNM trials. But I also wouldn't just say it's only the time actually in the zone actively resting and doing the hot-and-cold game either.

And come on, 5 minutes is also underselling it. If you're lucky, sure, you're changing jobs, going out to a zone, and getting the correct pop in 5 minutes. With bad luck, you hit Pashow Marshlands and you pop an T2 NM and... it's the wrong one. And the one you need is 3/4 across the damn zone. Certainly more than 5 min on some of these!

And that's kind of annoying to me to ask friends to help you with that kind of mundane BS. Yeah sure, you're just messing around with some buddies and go do it, fine. But actually asking someone to stop what they're doing and spend their time on THAT? Which you can easily do by yourself? IDK, I'd rather not bother people, and it frees me up to go whenever I feel like it with no advance warning and zero coordinating with others. But of course, personal decision here.

To put it another way: I've worked jobs where I'm on call the majority of the time not actively doing a task, but then I get called to do the important thing and I do it.

If I'm on schedule for 8 hours, and end up getting asked to do work that only actually takes 5 min per hour for 8 hours, should I get paid for my whole 8 hour shift, or just the 40 minutes I was actually doing the task? Apparently if Maletaru is the boss, his workers get paid only for 40min.

This is what we call an analogy. It's helpful when people disagree about topics, to agree about different scenarios, then compare the differences between them. Now that you've learned what an analogy is, do you see how i used it in my post? If you don't count the time between tasks, like a month between favors, then you shouldn't count the hour between VWNM.

Changing jobs takes maybe 10 seconds, tops, but yeah I'll give you it's actually 5 minutes and 10 seconds. For the first one. Good point.

No, I wouldn't ask them to stand around doing nothing for an hour while we wait for respawns, that's insanely stupid.

Do you really need me to write this out in crayons for you? Have you guys jever had a friendship or a linkshell before? Here's how I go about this stuff:

After finishing a sortie run: "hey, anyone got a colorless abyssite and mind popping a few chesma for me?"
Ask in linkshell: "anyone available to pop a few chesmas?"
Ask in discord: "hey, anyone available to help me out with some chesmas?" Then they say sure, I'll be on around 6, are you free then?

It's not rocket surgery and doesn't need to be done this instant. I can wait until tomorrow if I need to.

Capuchin said: »

See my examples above if you need help imagining how having friends works. You aren't demanding they drop what they're doing, you just ask at an opportune time when they're not busy. Or you plan it ahead. Just like anything else.

Hey, anyone available to help synergize a fotia torque?
Hey, can someone open the three mage gate for me?
After this dynamis run, anyone wanna run some nyzul?

You know, things that are much easier and more efficient with 2 people rather than 1. Like VWNM.

If anyone's on carbuncle and needs someone to pop a T2 VWNM, let me know. It's not a big deal at all, it's a tiny time investment that really saves you a lot of hassle and I don't mind, because it's basic human decency.

Explain to be how employment relationships are the same as friendships. Am I contracting you to do 8 hours of everything I ask you to do? Are you required to be in my party for 8 hours straight? Do you need 10 more examples how this analogy completely falls apart? If you told your boss you worked on that project for 8 hours, wouldn't he think you're an alien with no concept of how humans keep track of time?

Call me crazy but the game inside the game of MMO involves helping other people out.

Otherwise why not just play a closed game?

Why farm up all that sweet cheddar if I can't show off how awesome I've become to a needy LS mate?

How does the "Break Rod" event happen during fishing?
I guess its frequency increases with the number of mistakes you make while fishing, but can it happen even if you make zero mistakes, just at a lower %?

I suspect it's unrelated to mini-game mistakes, since that can be completely bypassed. If the fish size is greater than the rod's "max size capacity," the rod or line will break--depending on some not-yet quantified threshold.

On Remora, for instance, broke 7 Lu Shang rods straight in a row at 116 skill. With Kachina Gloves: 11 line breaks (which was an improvement) and 8 rod breaks, before eventually catching it. It weighed ~3500 Pz.

setzor did some nice detective work on some of this: https://www.bluegartr.com/threads/131222-FFXI-Fishing-Math

What's the average drop rate on Opal Silk? Or your personal experience with it?

2 friends claim they got it 1/12 and 1/23, I personally went 1/373.
I was expecting it to take much more than that honestly, but they said I've been extremely unlucky.
Have I? Or just average and they got super lucky instead?

Said to be about 1% so going over 100 is just bad luck

Does anyone happen to know what these two VFX are used for? I figure they are both PvP, "A l'attaque!" is using the same style and jingle as "Laissez aler!" from the start of a Ballista match, and "Zum Angriff!" uses the same style as Brenner's "Lasset beginnen!" but, I can't seem to work out if they are in use or not. Were they perhaps variants for the FR/DE localisations or are they used for anything else? They are much higher in resolution than the two in use also, which makes me think they were added much later on in the game's life in comparison to the effects in use.

If anyone's got anything on them it'd be real helpful, thank you!

Gonna spoiler both because they are quite short gifs so they would get annoying to watch over and over probably.

I have a Choplix's Coif that I've never successfully used. Tried in Dynamis - Jeuno (D) in a small party and tried in omen in a small alliance.

Do I need to be solo, are some zones just restricted, or is it both?

Why does wiki claim sortie D objective for casket #D2 requires to vanquish demisang in a specific job order?
In this video
YouTube Video Placeholder

he engages a BLM and a WHM first and later finishes a WAR at 19:20 that spawns red chest.

Didn't watch video but:

Red Chest is for killing 3 fomors AFTER Demisang Deleterious is killed.

Chest #D2 is the second blue chest, which is obtained by killing 6 fomors in job order, WAR MNK WHM BLM RDM THF. While #D1 is for vanquishing any six different jobs.

Red chest is #D_ and it is unrelated to #D2

So he got the the blue chest #D1 for killing 6 fomors and red chest #D for killing Demisang Deleterious + 3 fomors but ignored the order objective for blue chest #D2? That makes sense I guess.

Why is it that one of my mules only gets 1 star while all my other characters seem to get 2.

Normally you won't get stars if monsters are not well. Presumably the campaign gives an extra star rather than doubling, since 0*2 is still 0.

Does anyone know what causes Casket #F1 to spawn? This is the chest in F quadrant's Exit Bitzer where you have to wear 5/5 Empy gear. I've gotten the casket with 5/5 Empy+1 and 5/5 Empy+3 ...and sometimes not at all. I have a toggle that actually equips the set for 30 seconds. Sometimes I get the Casket and sometimes I don't know. (This is after Gartell has been killed). Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks.

What? Sounds like you're mixing up F and G

F-interact with bitzer wearing, or locksytling, full emp set of the job you're on
G-target (dont interact) bitzer for 30 seconds, box loads automatically.

You're mixing up F and G.

F - Lockstyle 5/5 Empyrean

G - Stare at Bitzer for 30 seconds without moving while within 6y of it

E - Kill 12 mobs in the same room as the Bitzer

H - Leave and re-enter basement

Your macro EQUIPS the gear, or lockstyles it?
If you EQUIP the gear but you're lockstyling something else, you won't get the chest.
If you lockstyle it, it will work every time.
If you equip it and you don't have any lockstyle set, it will work.

Dressup makes this confusing because you can't actually see what your character is wearing (depending on settings)

You may want to just edit your post, because there is enough confused people parroting misnformation.

Just to be clear, Vyre described the objectives correctly. Maletaru identified my issue, which was /lockstyle being on (to prevent blinking) is what messed up my Empy set equip macros, and that's why F casket was registering. (Why does SE implement things that conflict so easily, like this? I'll never understand).
