Sorry for the super-late reply on this one but I checked in with the dev. team regarding this for you. They haven’t solidified any specific adjustment plans as of yet, but they are looking into the problem of how it is difficult to read.

XI View Icons

I guess if you compare it to XI View's it is kinda difficult to read, but not that much.

I find it gets incredibly diffcult to read when the background it's on is bright. I was always constantly adjusting my camera to stupid angles so the number was resting on a background that made it easy to read. This was before XI View.

I do the exact same thing, but I don't use XI view, maybe I should.

I play on a 14in monitor, granted it's a 3d and a great quality, and I don't even have to move my screen I can always read the numbers. On my old monitor I have a few issues and have to change the angle on bright white/sandy stuff.

It can do a number of things, in my opinion all safe legitimate changes you can make to the files on your computer.

XI View was very popular to make character/npc names clear and crisp to read. SE has recently taken note of this and made a version of their own but I personally still prefer XI View.

XI View also changes the target cursor to a blue one which is appealing for me.

It also changes the font to a nice, readable crisp font that works out much better than the one SE provided. It goes not only for the chatlog but also menus as well.

It also has a variety of other name font styles you can choose from, as well as chat log backgrounds too if I recall correctly.

Everything provided and everything I said can be installed at your choice, you have full control of what you put into your installation folder and can change exactly what you want (with a little knowledge of what everything is, isn't that hard).

I always suggest that if you have never done this before, make a back up of what your about to change but more importantly know exactly what you need to do. If you erase a bunch of dat files you'll have to reinstall or scan for missing files and install from the POL client. It isn't that hard to do but it is very easy if you know what to do.

Before I started playing on PC again (started at launch on PC but went to PS2 version a year later for traveling reasons) I had an extremely hard time seeing the counter on the PS2 version when on a small TV. I mean it was barely legible when sitting more than one foot away.

Wait, they're catering an update for the PS2 players? ****

I'm surprised the PS2 can handle an icon update! /burn

I think XI view (last time I downloaded it) came with a variety of different fonts and had all the original files with it too.

I personally just use the icons since they're awesome. I'm too used to the newer font (used XI views font until the update in which SE changed their font) and I like my normal cursor =X

I've noticed sometimes the zone's skybox or environment around where you can fight blends in very well with the numbers on the original icons. I don't really have any examples where this can happen as I didn't really take note at the times it occurred but it does happen quite often, for me at least.

EDIT: What Bojack said, basically. :P

Always had this problem, especially on reading DNC flourishes, but you can fix statustimer by doing //statustimer setpos 140 70 in the game chatlog (or just put statustimer setpos 140 70 in your init so it'll load at startup) and it'll just move the timers slightly under the icon so you can actually read the numbers. Or just use FFview which works too, lol

You do not, in the rar open it up and if you use a widescreen open up that folder, if you use a square one use the folder above it that says normal or w/e. Inside will be a single folder called ROM.

Find your FFXI installation folder and open it up, if you see a few folders with ROM in the name you found it, if not then you're not in the right place (its in program files, if your 64 bit its program file x86). Place the ROM folder within the RAR file into the FFXI folder (do not place it into the rom folder in the ffxi installation folder, place it it inside the ffxi folder). You'll be asked if you want to merge both ROM folders, say yes. You'll then be asked to merge 4 more folders (or 5) say yes. Then you'll be asked to overwrite about 45 files or w/e, say yes.

If you did that then your done, log into the game and see if anything changed (you'll notice right away at the accept/decline screen).
