i tried with one of the alchemy rods since i could repair those with 1 light crystal as opposed to 50 but it turned out like 28 broken rods per lik so i leveled ww and camped the torque/gp hands
That is not a very good rate at all. And considering I have a very high chance of losing the Halcyon Rod, I guess this won't work out. Thanks for the answer.
Same, no problems for me so far. Noticing very strange results in Oldtown (in my experience). Just gone 15 casts with 'You didn't catch anything', then I hook and catch a Pisces, then gone 7 without a bite.
(Putting it down to bad luck, as guy nearby seems to be catching ok).

Right after an update it takes a while for fishing bites to pick up, at least in some areas. Been that way as long as I remember. In a couple hours everything will be normal.

Mindi- Sounds to me like you had a bad day fishing. I noticed a significant up in catch rate on new moon's and full moon...Off 100 pugils i'd catch somewhere between 10-16 with mega-moglification. To be honest, i caught more not having to super tank the 5 nm's.

Are you fishing up the items so they don't consume the bait? I get about 8-10 matsya with 60ish pugils. 98 fishing atm
Not sure if this has been answered, but if I wear fishing gear and it puts my fishing skill above the cap for the fish I'm trying to skill up on, will that slow down the skill ups?

Not sure about this. I know you can still skill up to the fishes' level even if the skill+ gear puts you over cap. (I.E. said fish is 40 cap, and your skill is 38, you get +4 with regular gear you can still get skill ups till 40). As far as skill gain rate I would think it wouldn't have an effect, unless you had the skill up ring.
Personally, I have yet to get a skill up ring. But from just observations i noticed that when you reach around the x6/x7 area, skill ups start to slow down (don't know what they are with a ring). Once you get passed x0 (in my case 90) Skill ups start to come faster. It took me almost 3 days to go from 89 to 90 (Getting .1 mostly, then a couple of .2, within 150+ fish), but once i hit 90 i got .7 within 40 fish (Armored Pisces) I took my fishing up to 88 from 15 in Nashmau, and noticed this to be a common trend, a ton of skill ups within the x0-x6, and afterwards its slow as molasses. I also did this with no skill up ring so results may vary if you are using a skill up ring.
Is there some trick to targeting cone calamary?
I seem to hook a lot of random crap in Bibiki Bay using sliced cod as bait even though Great Blue says everything besides Cone Clamary should be rarely hooking the line.
Not using minnows because i'm at 21 fishing and I still alternate between catching Tiger Cod/Herring for skillups still, then slice the cod into bait to go after calamary.
Maybe my lower skill with support is hurting the biterate even though they are easy to land once I get a bit from one?

wait wait.. when you fish up items you dont use the bait? haha ok that explains the bad rates we have and why all your numbers are higher.... good to know :x thx alot for the information. Never really cared about items/bait before so didnt know lol

I've never really tried Cone Calamary in that area, so I don't know. At 21 skill though I would recommend going to North-West Qufim cliff for skill ups. With a minnow there you'll catch a lot of Bluetail and Cone Calamary. Gigant Squids bite too so if you don't have a Lu, cancel the !!! bites.

I know Blue Gartr has a Fishing topic already, but I would like to see this community get involved a little bit and talk, since not everyone visits BG. I would love to have a topic just for fishers including veteran fishers, casual fishers, and even players just starting out and want to ask a few questions without being embarrassed about starting a whole topic for a simple answer they could not find.
I only ask that you keep any bot talk to a minimum, preferably none.[Moderator edit: No bot talk] I want this to be a place where we can discuss anything from GP items of the day to what lure/bait to use or what area is best. A quick mention of how you're doing on the lu shang/ebisu quest, how you're doing getting your fishing items from Grounds of Valor, that item you're saving your GP up for, or how much you wish you could hurt Zaldon for not finding anything in your fish for the 10,000th time. Your lucky moment streaks and the moments when you have nothing come your way and question why you started fishing in the first place. Anything that comes to mind, think of it as the random thoughts thread for fishing.
