I don't really know how much it takes to make a game, and I don't know how much games make after they are released so this is basically a question.
I read that it took 5 years for FFXI to break even. I would say that it probably took 5 years to develop as well. So 10 years.
Would they not make more money making offline games (and more of them, maybe 2 ore 3? IDK)?
Yes, presuming the proposed offline games are worth buying.
But even if S-E made 2-3 unsuccessful offline games that bombed, they wouldn't lose *anywhere* near the amount of money they will lose if they stubbornly decide to push another MMO game onto the market. Making a video game isn't cheap, but making a MMO game is a *massive* expenditure, and making a *quality* MMO game is even more expensive.
Considering the (very) saturated market for MMO games currently, it's a *gigantic* financial gamble. It's a high-risk, low-reward dynamic. It makes almost no sense from a business standpoint now.
Back when WoW and FFXI were under development, MMO games were a somewhat fresh idea and there were millions of people eagerly anticipating their arrival. The internet still wasn't mainstream back then. Most people had dial-up ISPs and/or AOL. Broadband and Facebook were pipe dreams.
Nowadays, people who play MMO games already have their hook, and there simply are not many idle gamers out there eagerly waiting to dive into a multi-year commitment with a new MMO. Square-Enix *MUST* know this ... they'd have to *really* have their corporate heads way up their *** to not understand this.
Maybe they do?
I don't know.
I'd still say this "announcement" from S-E is simply a publicity stunt.
Regardless of what anyone feels about FF7, it's clear they no longer have the key resources and members available at hand for a reasonable remake.
We'll just end up with some pretentious grimdark crap, cutting out anything remotely funny and enjoyable for the sake of OMG SO DEEP N' BADAZZ.
They're 100% capable of making a FFVII remake.
I think Flion said it best awhile ago;
The main reason they aren't making it is because so many people will have such high expectations of it. If they even mess up one thing (which they'll find SOMETHING to whine about) then they'll get yelled at for being a horrible company, etc etc.
It'd be kinda cool if they revisited some old Square-side IPs. Front Mission is definitely out of it (FM Online already existed, FM5 wrapped up the main series, and FM Evolved destroyed it) and nobody likes SaGa anymore. Though SaGa would fit kinda well because the series is all about non-linearity and individuals making their own stories. But...
One thing I don't get is, that they are telling us that there is no time for a ff7 remake, but creating another mmo...hello?!
That is because FFVII was terrible. Leave bad games alone.
I finally played 7 a year ago or so... I didn't get what all the hype was about.. The game play wasn't exactly engaging, the story line didn't draw you in, the graphics are for the most part laughable, even for a game of it's era..
I have no idea why people are always holding that game up like it changed gaming, or was a miracle game..
If you played FF7 for the first time a year ago, I can understand why you would be underwhelmed. However, if you had played it in 1997/98, you probably would have been mystified and impressed like the rest of us were. Remember, it was a PS1 game. Not PS3 or PS2. There was never a game like FF7 before FF7.
I'm not sure it "changed gaming" or was a "miracle" ... but it most certainly was and is an awesome RPG. Probably one of the Top 10 of all-time across all platforms.
I personally think one of the main reasons FF7 is so revered is that it has a near-perfect balance between "linear" storyline and "open-ended" content. In my experience, RPG gamers get all bent when a game's story/progression is "too linear". On the flipside, games that are too "open-ended", and therefore lack continual achievements and (ultimately) completion ALSO tend to irritate RPG gamers (or at least many of them). Somehow, FF7 provided BOTH an enjoyable linear progression AND a desirable amount of open-ended content ... cooked together into a divine RPG stew.
FF6 had a similar "recipe" for success. But FF7 did it with 3D graphics and a main character with big boobs.
That said, I have no idea why people are so enamored with the idea of a FF7 "remake". It would be a flop with a cult following; not a real, marketable game.

I agree. But the sad part is that, even though I think it's a horrible idea, it would still be better (for the company) than ANOTHER MMO, in my opinion.
Yeah, definitely manpower. Key players are thinned out, busy with other projects.
Expectations do play a role though. FF13 set a certain bar in terms of graphics unfortunately and FF7, a game that probably has four times as much content, would have to make a near-impossible jump to meet the same standard. Just the hundreds of pre-rendered backgrounds alone prove to be a gigantic problem; those won't cut it anymore in this era and we'll need completely redesigned areas.
Man, another MMO by SE...what are they thinking?
Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but common sense tells me that this is a horrible idea business-wise.
I've heard some people say that they hope it is a FFXI-2, but that, too, doesn't make much sense to me. If they were to make a FFXI-2, and, for example, let people transfer their account/character details over, it'd remove players from the original game. Not sure how many new players it'd bring, either. MMOs are for a very specific audience.
Furthermore, not sure what all the FFVII hate is about. I agree that it is overrated, what with all the spin-offs it got, but you can't deny that it is a good game. Compare it to the fail coming out these days (sorry but, FFXIII I'm looking at you. Dirge of Cerberus, you too. While I'm at it, FFX-2. I could go on~).
It had solid gameplay and a solid story, believable characters. It wasn't perfect and it certainly isn't the perfect game like so many people hail it to be, but it doesn't suck either.
(Also, it wasn't my first FF so no nostalgia glasses on here xD)
Hey 1 mess up with 14. Who cares. Another attempt and maybe they will learn from their mistakes? I got a feeling this one is gonna fking rock! SE not the people to make the same mistake twice.
Except for they made the same mistake twice. When they released FFXI it was horrible. Took them almost a year or so to get it half-decent, if I remember right.
I am so sick of people saying this. Unless you are JP you don't remember at all because it wasn't released in NA until a year after its initial release, and it didn't suck, either.
It had bugs like any game. But the most common jabs are content-based. XIV had 4 areas upon release, XI had a minimum of 12. An expansion was released 9 or 11 months later - XIV is at this point and the combat system isn't even fixed, there is no incentive to actually participate in the MMO world, and absolutely nothing to discover. It is a terrible game.

Those 4 areas in XIV are probably bigger than all 12 areas XI had.
IMO 1 big zone > many smaller zones.. The less actual loading I have to do, the better.
As long as the different parts of the zone look different, I don't mind one big zone but when they have the same music and look it's annoying. I'd prefer loading screens then.

I'd say the different regions of the zones in XIV are about as diverse as the zones in XI.

Damn, I left myself right by you in gridania looking down on your char in a very creepy manner. (found you by chance, IM NOT A STALKER)
The different areas are in no way more diverse. 12 is also a minimum count of the paths leading to Jeuno - more may have been there already, and missions would've existed before RotZ less than a year later, meaning Ghelsba, KRT, etc. were available. I looked this up once actually and I think it was something around 30 areas before RotZ.
Even without those added areas, XIV's 4 areas do not equal 12, even in size. Again, even if they did - they are all the same, with the same music, mobs, etc. There are those 'dungeons' below, like the one below La Noscea. I do not know if there are equivalents for the other two areas, but that still brings the grand total to: terrible game.
I am sorry I am so aggressive about making this point; I've just heard people defend XIV by hating on XI, the game they actually love that brought them to be interested in XIV in the first place. It is also equally baffling that most people agree with this statement without a second thought - seriously, XI was far more expansive and far more playable, with far more/better content, and a much greater scope of MMO-style play (though I will admit this is due to the virginity of MMOs as this time as massive time consuming games rather than typical online games which they now are). People asking questions, wondering about things, partying.
If anybody still disagrees XIV should have an expansion by now and it doesn't even have content. Before someone asks I logged on XIV as early as last week.
Edit: I bought a 1700 dollar computer to play XIV. My hate is in no way a bandwagon hate - I wanted to love this game. I really did.
Didn't say more diverse, said as diverse.. A lot of the zones in XI look a like.. The switch in scenery isn't completely dramatic between connected zones in XI, they sorta blend in. Same thing in XI, except no zone lines in between the different 'regions'. Each major zone does overall, look the same but there are still differences. Although this point is more subjective.. A region can have the same color scheme going on, and the landscapes and landmarks stand out as drastically different.
Anyways, this is all opinion, you don't need to apologize for expressing your opinion.
In a financial meeting, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said the company was working on a big MMO in addition to Final Fantasy XIV. "I think we will reveal it sometime this year," said Wada.
