ice has a lower density than liquid water. when it melts it will add a large amount of liquid and raise the sea level if enough of them melt
it's less dense in the same area, if it melts it will become more dense, therefore the area will decrease, therefore the level should lower.
density = mass/volume if density is going up then volume will be going down as the mass is staying the same. Freshwater melting into saltwater.
seawater is more dense, so I don't see how that matters...

The argument being that large quantities of above ground glaciers (in the sense of polar caps) melting and entering into the sea. Think of it like a glass filled to the very top with Ice water. still the ice under the water would melt, which would more than negate it...
and the article is inaccurate, I can tell already. edit: it would be accurate if what was displacing the area was seawater, not freshwater ice, but that isn't the case. edit: oh well, I'll discuss it with my physics professor tomorrow, not going to derail the funnies anymore. Not necessarily true. Ice breaking off and entering the sea does not automatically indicate that the lower ice (below sea level) is also melting. The above ice warms, cracks, breaks under the pressure, and enters the sea. The ice below sea level does not warm to a degree that it melts. Think of it more like "adding" water. You're correct in thinking that melting an iceberg won't raise the sea level - but when you melt a glacier (that exists on the Poles) the sea level WILL rise.
