Required learning in the navy nuke program. Even for the non reactor operator types. How else would you get the public to trust someone straight out of HS with no college to run a reactor?

I don't think you understand just how much Navy especially the nuclear power program policies are determined what if PR situations.

Along the lines of proving we are competent I spent a good 100+ hours a month documenting and presenting sending the 1 hour of training we did a week and the monthly test in a way that would "prove" we were compenent but that I made things hard enough that we were clearly trying to improve or some BS.

Works out really good since the water also is used to reflect neutrons back in and transfer heat to eventually make power... though liquid sodium transfers heat so much better... graphite moderates way better etc. But everything has it's pros and cons

Pretty much. And alot of testing and what ifs that get added. Having been the guy who puts in all the changes I actually ended up reading alot on it that most people never even knew about. That and I got bored on watch alot. And our XO used to be NRRO so would always try to test peoples knowledge lol

I'm sure wiki could tell you... or google searches. Alot of power companies have some info on there particular plants etc.

At least they can get a new fancy one built.
Not cost efficient to save it after that. Chemical shutdown is kinda a last resort since it works really good and it takes alot to get it running again. Like trying to wash out all the boron forever. The seawater is just corriding the *** out of systems meant to last forever. They'd pretty much have to replace all that. At which point probably better off just getting a new one

Part of me feels like it would be such a waste though. There's a lot of auxiliary equipment that can be salvaged so I guess it really just needs assessing because the other reactors there are still operational.
Yeah but with that kind of contimination clean up of the equipment usually involves sending people in full contained air tight suits with if they are lucky force fed air as ***gets hot if not some kind of tanks. Stay times and such. A few years ago one of the carriers up here cleaned up the RC after discovering a long time leak... it was pretty intense and someone even passed out from the heat lol. Even then the whole plant will have tons of hot spots all over... sometimes it's just better to call it quits. Unless you are the military then your pride wont let you

Reading about this stuff, it seems so insane that reactors were ever designed with positive void coefficients, like at Chernobyl. I mean, c'mon, wtf were they thinking. That's just asking for problems.
