Start off small, equip lots of CHR and charm decent challenge mobs and throw them at even match mobs.

Test your limits. You see that certain mobs have better attack/evasion than others, ie: Qufim leeches

outside of abyssea...charm...those mobs will last longer compared to jugs. EXP is easy to get now so you can just charm DC or EM and kill more DC and EP mobs for good exp. Also...if it's possible in the area you are in...use weakness to the prey you're fighting to your advantage... example: Birds strong against Aquans.

I would strongly recommend following this BST guide on wiki for solo spots. It got me to 75 (back when you could ONLY solo BST to 75). Now that exp is boosted you might even be able to stay at some more favorable camps longer.

Sticking to a courier carrie is a great idea for most cases below 75.
You shouldn't use CC below 55. Use Crab Familiar if you need a crab for a jug pet. Just to clarify.
