Spoony: Sorry to ruin the mood in here, but I need some advise if anyone has some.
My sister was married for about 5 years to a guy that beat her daily and constantly cheated on her. When I called to tell her that my son had died, her husband left her crying in their apartment to go screw his underage gf. 2 weeks later on my birthday, she tried to call me and he almost killed her by choking her when she tried to. Eventually she left him and ended up with a couple bfs that were *** insane, but she got rid of them fast.
Here we are now, she's got this bf who started out amazing. Never asked her for money, always took her out to dinners and movies and everything. His mom hates her, but he stands up for her always. It turns out 2 weeks ago, he wanted to use her car but she had no gas so she said no. He ends up wrapping his hands around her throat, almost killing her on our mom's birthday. She left him for a day and is now back with him, swearing he's nice, he isn't like he ex husband, she's not leaving him.
I told her that if she stays with him, I'm having no contact with her and she's not going to know anything about her soon to be nephew, and all she said was "bye." She still swears he's a nice person, won't kill her (though he already tried) etc.
HOW THE *** can I get her to realize she's being god damn HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE? She was smart enough to get out of the marriage, out of the shitty relationships before, wtf is wrong with her now. Skull Response: Well I think there may have been more to that new guy then what was told IF she forgave him. Now things still SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN to that point EVER. Some people can make genuine mistakes BUT that is a rather big one to make, and might make them later on. So prolly best for her to leave him too.
I don't think you are doing the wrong thing by trying to make her realize she will lose you if she does not get away from someone that can abuse her.
I hope others can give better advice. =/

The best in this situation is just hoping he doesn't actually kill her.
Why the *** a guy thinks it's his place to put hands on a woman is *** beyond me.
The shitty part is I'm so so so pissed off at her right now that I don't even feel bad for her. Like at this point I'm just like "yeah well you deserve it for staying" and the fact that I feel that way pisses me off more ><

@Spoons: I would assume she refuses to accept he's as bad as the others after having been emotionally damaged so much already. Like she's holding onto the hope rather than the relationship itself.
Maybe.
I agree with this. It's just like my sister. She clings to trash. She has 3 kids (from 3 different guys) 1 is in jail, 1 moved away, 1 is a drug dealer, she'll be having a 4th kid in a couple months from a guy to smokes pot all day long, steals her money, and won't get a job.
There's nothing you can do about it. She's been beaten, raped, jailed.. all for these guys, and she keeps DOING it. Over and over. She's 31 btw. I tried to help my sister for 10 years and I finally gave up and I really just don't care anymore.

@Spoons: you could possibly see if a judge will order her a psych evaluation, but it's very unlikely.

I guess I should just let it go. I'm 900 miles away, which really sucks because I can't even really be there for her when she needs me. We were never close at all growing up and we still aren't, maybe I should just keep on with the distant relationship and drop it?

If that happens well it's no ones fault but their own.
Happens once in a marriage, okay thats bad family helps out.
Happens again and you're oblivious, no you're partially responsible at this point.

Why does she continually date the same "kind" of guy? Dating is trial and error, but geez! There's a pattern there.

To go more in depth... I'm the kind of person who stays in abusive relationships as well - no, scar doesn't abuse me don't worry - because I transfer the fact that object of my love is bad onto myself. In simple words, instead of accepting that the only person who makes me feel good is actually horrible, I'd rather put the blame on myself. The fault is mine, I'm sorry, I won't upset you anymore.
That's not right, obviously, but it happens. The problem lies in her emotional damage.

Nothing you can really do about it :/ She has to wise up on her own.. if you tried to get in the middle of it, it might backfire and her end up hating you.

You did basically give her an ultimatum, which I felt should have worked but she is holding her ground standing by him. I still feel like you should help her, but she has to be the one that wants to leave.

She's never been alone, which is part of the issue. She went straight from living with our parents to running away (she dropped out our senior year and we didn't hear from til 2 years later.) with some *** that she left for another guy. After that, she went to another guy, another, another. She would see they were trash and she'd dump them. She was never single for more than a week.
I think part of her issue is having her friends and family be right. We've told her people are trash and she refuses to hear it til she gets beat on. She's scared to be alone and she's scared to be wrong.

I had a roommate in college who's BF beat her senseless on our front porch then camped down the street in his car waiting for us to go to class and/or work when she would be alone.
We took her to file a restraining order. She didn't do it. Then she went back to him two weeks later. Some people are just masochists. Sad.

It's not a matter of intelligence anyway...some people have psychological problems and those can be beyond self-control.

Suppose I'll just leave it alone. I'll stand by what I said, I'll have nothing to do with her. She's family, my sister, so I do feel like it's my problem too, but worrying about her when she isn't going to change is just gonna give me an ulcer and make my baby a spaz... more of a spaz...
Thanks for the help guys, you really did make me feel better.

They like to be the perpetual victim rather than nut up? Like I said, some people are just masochists, or they love the attention they get from being in constant danger and the comfort they receive from their peers. Yes, that is a psychological problem.

Some people are just fking crazy. I don't understand what frame of mind you'd have to be in to beat the person you love out of anger.
I just don't get it.

And you're exactly right.
It is harder, so if a dude does get beat up by a chick, most of the time they end it.
It's just two different rationals for staying in a relationship.
Girls will stay in a physically abusive relationship because "He does love me."
Guys on the other hand will stay in emotionally abusive relationships because "Doesn't matter had sex."
Neither are smart.
But thats not love at that point.
Girls literally turn stupid when they think someone is in love with them most of the time. It's disgusting seeing a 25-35 year old woman act like a 15 year old, but they do it.

This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
