I love to learn as well but learning binary just seems so totally pointless. You will never need to be able to read it in anything you ever do.

We're just goofing around. It's as dead as Latin, but who knows? Maybe I'll get a question about how binary works while playing Bezzer Wizzer or Trivial Pursuit one night.

I had to double up on my iron supplements. The only problem I've had was my anemia resurfacing a bit. Food aversion to fried chicken that's been the only thing.

lol the only thing I've really craved this whole time is fried chicken! I had to take extra vitamins for a while, but it was totally okay because the only ones that stay down are the chewy flintstones ones lol

Ironically, over christmas binary did come up in our game, but it wasn't how to read. Something about the first binary reader ever made or something. My sister's answer was the best, "1010".

I can't imagine the need to be able to do the Spock hand thing, but I spent days teaching my hands to be able to. Honestly, I feel cooler being able to do it.

Well that's just swell.

Now just teach her to count in oct and hex.

Things that aren't practical information for me, I take it? LOL!

Just easier ways to manipulate/show binary numbers.

like the number 255 is 255 in decimal.

FF in hex.

1111 1111 in binary.

377 in octal. (according to a calculator, was too lazy to look it up).

the hexadecimal number system employs the 0-9 of the decimal system plus the letters A-F.

so A = 10, B=11, C=12, D=13, E=14, F=15

(some of you may recognize the number 255 as certain max stats in certain games, others may remember the "99" limit, well it was imposed instead of an even "100" due to the limitation in size, same thing with the whole y2k phenomenon.

hex does have some practical purposes, particular in network and memory addressing.

Well, the literal definition of a dead language is a language no longer being used in any country around the world. Latin is, by definition a 'dead' language but people still learn it. It's also a good language to learn, as it forms the basis for many words from the languages spoken around Europe and other parts of the world.

And binary is not dead as every single computer around the world uses it, but it's uses outside of being interfaced with by programmes is virtually non-existant.

I really wasn't being snarky. I can't think of any programmes that will allow you to input binary into their code to construct things anyway, even if you can understand or speak it.

Whether or not you count in it, its important to understand binary exactly because of the reasons Jet pointed out earlier. Programs (games) still have variable caps of things like 255, for a reason, and binary explains exactly that. It also why a Megabyte is 1048576 bytes and not 1000000 bytes.

Whether or not you're actually writing in binary isn't really important. But it is important to understand it because the whole computer architecture is built on 0 & 1.

Binary isn't a language. Binary is an "alphabet", as that metaphor goes, and machine code (assembly) is the language used by the processor (and varies, depending on the model of processor).

I guess it's just matter of opinion whether it's important or not. I know variable caps in certain programmes I work with are 255, but I don't need to know why to know that they are.

FYI, I understand how binary works... So just discussing really.

ftfy.

1. Latin is great to know for medical terminology.
2. I don't really give 2 shits about literal definitions.
3. Understanding binary is part of understanding hex, and there are plenty of programs that allow you to enter hex edit information.

old game-genie's worked on this premise.
game save editors work on this premise.
certain web coding works on this premise (that I can think of off the top of my head: colors).

At its essence it's a counting system. How you count is relatively arbitrary. Most likely we developed using base 10 because we have 10 fingers.

The flintstones ones are awesome because they taste like fruit snacks >.> If I didn't know it'd hurt me, I would have prolly eaten the bottle in one go when we first got them. Only 2 a day is depressing tbh

The lay person doesn't need to know why they cap out at that number, but I found the lessons useful when I was doing coding. They explain why you are structuring your code in particular way.
