wtf?

It seems like it's a yearly thing. The first time, they had to replace the house (it's a trailer). The second time I guess he set a bed on fire, they brought out a whole bedroom set totally charred. He seems to just like setting THEIR ***on fire, so I'm not super worried about it yet. He's probably 7 or 8 now and the only time he's ever outside is when he and his parents are coming or going.

Might be case by case Kali. I loathe my father, but when I have children (well let's face it.. IF at this point lol), I wouldn't be above discipline of any kind (barring anything extreme).

Agreed, also Kali.

Ovr's mom ditched his real dad when he was 2ish and his sister was about 4. Their step dad started beating the ***out of them basically right away, and a few years later their mom started to do it too. Alcoholic and abuse seem to go hand in hand, really. Anyway, because they'd get the crap knocked out of them on the regular, his sister's like terrified of laying a hand on her 4 kids because she doesn't want to end up like her mom was to her. Because of this, her kids pretty much run her *** because they know nothing is gonna happen to them.

why'd she try to kick the dog?

She's like 5 or 6, I think. Totally at the age she should know better, but doesn't. Her parents don't really parent. She also enjoys throwing rocks at cars driving past.
My neighbors down't believe in discipline, and they have two kids.

The boy refuses to eat more than a handful of food everyday, the girl will only eat snacks.

The boy will complain everywhere he goes, and when they go over to family gatherings he cries until they take him home because he wants to play video games. Then they gave in and bought him a laptop so he can take it with him and play them there.

I just don't understand what people have against discipline.

*** haaaate people that let their kids run them. Like how do you not realize you are the reason your kid is going to be the biggest douche canoe when they grow up because of that ***ugh
I think part of them don't want their kids to hate them, because they hate their parents?

or maybe their parents beat them too much so they don't do it at all?

It has to be something like that.

inconsistent punishments, lead to confusion.

I think children learn much differently than others. There is no set standard. It works or some, it doesn't for others. That's really all there is to it. Some kids just won't learn from losing their toy privileges and things of that nature.

My parents were *** in the discipline department.. I'd get whipped for something and then 5 minutes later they'd feel bad and buy me something. >.> I wish they had followed thru with most of their punishments.. but I guess I can't complain, I turned out okayish ^^

I agree that you don't have to be physical with them, but the first time they walk all over your ***, you better stop it right then or it's just going to get worse. Idc if you pop their *** or shove em in a corner, at least try to make your kid realize being a *** bag isn't gonna cut it.

I'm not opposed to a little swat if they're continually pushing to the point where they could potentially harm themselves or others.

I'm not opposed to a pop on the *** IF the kid already knows they shouldn't be doing w/e they get popped for. I hate when people bust their kid and the kid has no *** clue what's going on. My kids are going to know hey, don't go ripping things off shelves at the store. If they still wanna be douchers and do it, a quick pop will happen. You can't just expect little kids to know.

People just need to realize that discipline is not a bad thing, both to the people dealing it out and taking it. It's purpose is to correct disobedience, and to follow the rules of the household and behave accordingly.

People practice self discipline all the time, being able to control yourself is a must and that comes from learning what discipline is to begin with.

The problem I see is some people just don't know how to discipline their children, so they resort to extremes that really don't even help. If you believe hitting your child will stop their behavior, doing it too much will result in very negative side effects over their lifetime. Not disciplining them when they should will result in them doing w/e they please in life, no matter what the consequence is. This could even be the result of too severe discipline as well, the child no longer understand the discipline so they find a way to get around getting punished.

I took some severe verbal abuse from my mother when I was young after my father died, she didn't know how to cope with it and used me as a release from her anger and grief. I think that made me be very closed in and keeping everything to myself, not talking to kids at school and listening to what every teach had to say, and making sure I never made a mistake so I didn't have to deal with her even more.

I don't think parents really think about what their actions will result in for their children. It doesn't really apply here, but "for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction" I feel is true. If you sit your child in time out, then confront them afterwards and have them explain what they did wrong and why it was wrong, then you forgive them and make up with them, you are giving a punishment but you're comforting them afterwards. I think that's important, to show that you care for them after punishing them. I think too many parents just hand out punishments without showing their children that they are doing it because they love them and that they don't want them to grow up thinking that behavior is okay. Whether it be from the overload of stress from work and raising a child, and they are trying to take an easy way out, I still don't think it's okay to punish your child w/o following up with it.

That's how we both feel. A pop on the butt is definitely not the first thing we're gonna go to when it comes to punishment, but I don't feel like a pop is abuse, and that it will get a point across. If you don't talk with your kid, they're not gonna fully understand why what they did was wrong, and they'll end up doing it again. Let em know wtf happened, why it shouldn't happen, and that if they keep doing it, they'll be back in time out or w/e, or end up a sad panda when I pop buns.
