Why would I want a walkman again? They were huge, bulky things. I want something that fits in my pocket and doesn't castrate me when I sit down.
That retropod an example of taking something that works(ish), and making it worse.

I wouldn't want anything that contains an apple product, but that's just me, I have HIGH standards.
Edit: like I would never do something of the sort (ie: put a media player in a retro case without making sure the outside buttons worked for controls), it's possible they were just too lazy/ignorant to do it.

I was just talking to a friend of mine about winamp, I seem to recall it having some interesting settings of that nature, but gimme a minute and I can check to see if vlc does, he recommends mpc, so I imagine it does as well.
I'm not that much of an audiophile, I just like my media player to play all my files without having to find codecs, hence why I use vlc.
Winamp was great as it allowed you to *** around with audio inputs and outputs and direct where your playback went (ie: Skype, Vent, etc.)
Unfortunately I stopped using winamp the moment AOL (yes, A O *** L) bought them out. I simply don't trust AOL to keep their filthy hands off their licensed software. As far as I know or care, Winamp has become akin to Real Player.
yeah vlc has an equalizer, and I know it has streaming features, for if you want to like set up a streaming channel on your network, so let's say your xbox or ps3 or other device wants to pick it up, so you don't have to attempt to convert all your files.
I've never really played with it though, I need to get around to it.
(with my Pi comming soon though I'm told it can support xbmc and I'm told it's really good for such a thing so I may skip it, but I should try anyway).
