Yea, l4d is older. I'd suggest getting 2 and buying the DLC instead of getting the first one since it has a slightly better system imho and they have a complete remake of the first one as DLC for it.
Having spent most of my adult life in the Friend Zone, and in particular, having been contemplating my current Friend Zone problem quite a bit lately, here are things to consider:
1. Does she talk with you about guys who talk to her?
2. Have you hinted at being interested, and did it lead to awkward silence?
3. Mention how hard it is to meet good girls. Does she do anything OTHER than point out the that she is a good girl? (May include suggestions that you need to start doing more social activities, or even something along the lines of needing to take you out to meet people.)
4. Does she do ANY of the above, all while insisting that you're attractive if you say you're not?
Just four things that seem to be pretty universal signs that you're in the FZ.
Basing those answers on my own personal situation, I'm totally in the Friend Zone with my female friend. But I'm also in denial over it, trying to convince myself that if I stick with it through enough of the sucky guys she keeps dating, she'll change her mind.
Psychology is a funny thing.
