I am a good chunk of the way through the game (I think) and just got to the part where I am in a place I think was called grand pulse, it is basically a big field. I can do some hunts and whatnot and I can see on my map an arrow pointing where I think I need to be for the story to pick back up. Problem is anytime I try to go that way I end up getting attacked by behemoth kings and quickly receive a brand new *** for my efforts.
Is there something I am supposed to do, some special path, trick or what to get through here?

I think I know where you are. That's basically the first area in the game you have a sense of "free roam" in. It's essentially your first grinding area.
I'd suggest dicking around/doing hunts in that area till you are able to kill a King Behemoth in under 14 seconds (I think, it's been forever for me too) which is extremely easy once you get the hang of it. The main trick is to Preemptive Strike them no matter what and kill them before the stagger effect wears off.
Think I used Lightning/Fang/Hope with Light primarily as Ravager, Fang as Commando, and Hope as a Ravager only. I would sometimes swap Light to Commando as well, but only if the mob is staggered, which is true for the KBs. Though Light just does so much better as a Ravager with her one weap (forget name, but it gives the ATB advantage), and as much ATB "haste" as possible.
Just my take on the easiest way to beat the KBs quickly for mass CP and exp.
Edit~
The best grind spot is right at the beginning of this plains-area. Near the save point you first get to. There is a KB off to the right of it. You essentially PS him and then once battle is over, you run back to save point which is just far enough for him to respawn. Rinse, repeat.
