Thanks to The Old Republic, I'm going to end my whole Nostalgia Adventure on FFXI and hurry up to get my *** to level 95 or whatever so I can finish all the missions of importance, record them in full quality, enjoy new content for a bit then drop FFXI just in time for Old Republic :3
Dropping ffxi forever?

Not forever, just wanna hurry up and do the more fun/current stuff instead of sitting around as a gimp forever.
Also that means I'll be able to finish the primary missions of importance much faster.

My PC can barely meet the minimum requirements.
Probably gonna use my tax return towards a new rig upgrade instead of saving up for another Distant Worlds trip :<
But we'll see when the time comes.

Though I would appreciate some geek help in getting the most bang for my buck in upgrades.

Currently sporting:
2.8 GHz Dual Core
4 GB of DDR2 RAM (kinda slow)
512 MB VRAM Nvidia GTS 250

Just build a whole new computer. That's some pretty dated stuff. I don't really see the point in 'upgrading' when you're basically going to have to replace everything.

Just a shot in the dark, but since you have a dual core, I'm going to go out on a limb and say your motherboard probably won't support a good 'upgraded' CPU.. If you have to replace the motherboard, you might as well start from scratch.

EDIT: (this is just my opinion) if you want a build that's going to last and hold you over for a few years, I'd look into an i5 or i7 CPU, a motherboard that supports SLI/Crossfire, at least 6GB DDR3 RAM, and a top of the line, or nearly top of the line card. You don't actually need SLI/Crossfire yet, it's more of splurge thing at the moment, but with the way games are progressing, there's every possibility you may need dual cards to get the most out of games in the future, so you'll want to leave that option open. Although I doubt you'll actually need it, you might want to select a motherboard that also leaves some room for expansion on the RAM as well. Might as well go with a 1k PSU now (it's not like a 1k PSU is much more expensive then one you'd have to buy to run a single top of the line card) so that if you do decide you need to use dual cards, you won't have to upgrade the PSU as well as getting the additional card.

If I were to build a computer right now, that's the checklist I'd run through. I think my current computer is good for another couple of years though. As much as I'd like to build a whole new rig come tax refund, we got a bunch of other ***that needs taken care of.

today i learned about dynamic memory allocation...
i also learned that strings can be a *** to work with.

trying to make a program that (for the first part) asks for input of any number of names to list, then displays them.
but when i run it it takes the first name, and then when i hit enter after the second name it crashes. =/

I'll be sure to get a more up to date Mobo when I build my new rig as to leave plenty of headroom in the future. Unfortunately Intel has a tendency of making CPUs that jump socket to socket thus rendering your purchase useless over a shorter amount of time. But my current ring has done well for me over 3 years, so I can't complain.

Any recommendations as far as CPU and GPUs go?
I tend to favor Intel & Nvidia just so you know~
Have had too many driver issues with ATI in the past, and AMD is in cahoots with them so... yeah.

That sounds like lots of fun. I haven't played pool in forever, so I probably suck, but nothing beats a game of 8 and 9 ball with friends.
Also I think professional billiard tables are significantly more difficult and precision based than your average rec room pool tables.

I played pool last night, myself. I'm horrible at it though, which is funny because I've been playing the game for like 15 years now.

I'd definitely recommend the i7, it's what I've been using for well over a year now, I've actually as of yet to have it get bogged down or just say "*** you, I'm tired" despite my constant abuse.

As for GPU, I can't recommend anything, I stay as far away from Nvidia as I can.. I have never had a good experience with it, despite giving them quite a few chances. ATI is yet to fail me. Nvidia I've had cards crap out well before their time and struggled with driver issues.. ATI I've never had a driver problem (other then a just released game which is easily fixed with a Hotfix patch within a week) and every ATI card I've ever had has lasted me years.

I am biased because my issues with ATI were back in the very early 2000s. I'm sure they've had leaps and strides over the years, but I figure there's simply a better synergy in hardware and software compatability between Intel and Nvidia. I know it's kind of a marketing gimick, but there does tend to be a minor degree of stability when combining hardware that have known functionality between each other.

I'm likely to get an i7, but we'll see how cheap they've become now since they're starting to introduce Hex and Oct-Cores now.
