China just released an open source AI model that beats/matches everything the biggest and richest western AI companies have created, and that can do it cheaper and faster. The AI companies are struggling to rip it apart and steal everything from it to incorporate into their own.
Absolute shambles, 5-10 years of feelgood DEI policies and now we are the laughing stock of the world stealing the crumbs from Chinese gigabrains.

The US stopped China getting the best hardware from Nvidia to try keep from overtaking the US. The understanding was that the future of AI was based on stronger hardware coming from Nvidia and more power being pumped into it. This lead to everyone and their mom investing in Nvidia as the future of this technology.
This restrictions forced the Chinese AI industry to think outside of the box and redesign their AI from the ground up, to work on cheaper hardware and use less power. Not only did they successfully do that, but in doing so they created a better AI system too.
So not only have China caught up, but they have destroyed the idea that brute force via hardware is automatically the future of AI. Nvidia btfo.

They generate a synthetic data set using existing models, then created their tool based off of that data.
Most people thought the output quality would suffer doing this, but it appears it did not and the end result is an AI built on a data set that has been described as analogous to a lossless compression of the existing models.
