"Security" companies get paid to secure against end users, not for them. Their software is spying software that they pay other security companies to not get flagged as malware by antivirus when in fact there is no difference between their software and malware.
There's even worse things than that, those spying cameras all offices install that track behaviour. How long employees spend at their desk, how often and how long they spend in the bathroom etc.

Personally, I track my own work at desk time even when I work at home. It's one of the best way to improve work efficiency.
I don't think it is a bad thing that working time is tracked unless you don't care about efficiency.

unless you don't care about efficiency. I think the issue here is that most westerners are not paid by task, but by salary or by hour. Unless they are personally invested in their job, they do not care about efficiency. For hourly workers on a task[state contractors come to mind], they will actually make more by working slower.
So, most workers do not like the idea of their time spent away from desk being tracked, because they know it is higher than it should be. Honestly, the hardest working should appreciate it, because it shows that they are working harder. But, the rest will get outraged for the opposite reason, and they outnumber the hard workers.

We should go back to punching in then to track work time. And also get paid overtime. Oh, right, that costs money and companies don't want to do it. Just spy on your employees then, that's great management.

We still punch in at my work, and get paid overtime even for a week with a holiday in it. (I am in Washington state in the USA)
I also get paid a minimum of 4 hours for any work on the weekend so if I sign in to review data for 1 hour on Saturday I get 4 hours of pay. The data I review results in units released to production for the people at the factory to work on.

Yeah, it does depend on the job.
Can speak for the tech sector, if you are a full time employee working "office hours", ie a typical 9-5, there is zero overtime being paid.
Work routinely overruns, and there is an expectation that you "put in the effort", ie work long hours. Which 90% do (the people you are competing with).
On contract work where you are paid hourly work time is both tracked and you get paid overtime since it is both hourly and tracked.
I once worked for a company that made people sign away their right to not work more than 40 hours a week (there is a law) and asked you to come in on public holidays. No overtime pay.
Another job had "call outs" - you get a message/text/call out of office hours that something happened and you need to login and do something/fix it whatever. Even/especially if it is 2am and you were asleep. Zero overtime pay.

I find it funny a company that exists and is paid as cybersecurity specialists and to safeguard companies computer equipment, just did far more damage worldwide than any cyber attack in history.
The cybersecurity industry is in a pitiful state and most of it is full of ***, most of the industry has sold FUD with snake oil level solutions for decades and those solutions are starting to make their way into regulatory requirements due to lobbying. It's theater most of the time. If you see behind the curtain this isn't even the dumbest or worst thing that's happened, it's just the worst on such a large scale.

The greatest problem (imo) is the conflicting interests in its businesses with supposely their objective.
If you exist to avoid a virus damage, you depend on virus continuosly existing and evolving, so you actually still have your meaning.
So, if virus evolving is benefitial to your business, is that a stretch thinking they could benefit if they themselves actually invest in that area?
Or maybe we live in a world, where every human in existence only works with high regard to laws, ethics and decency?

More money in repair, than prevention.
Standard greed protocols. A good product puts it's owner out of business.

It's not a conflicting interest, you're just mistaken on what their objective actually is.

On a very small scale maybe, IR and forensics bring in good money but it’s inconsistent.
The bigger problem is how costly and time consuming it is to do things correctly and the industry has been convincing people for years that half baked solutions work because they scale easier. The sad reality is most people don’t care enough to do the right thing and/or their budget won’t allow for it, so the majority of products and services are just checking off a box and doing minimal things.
It’s a very difficult industry to do things right in because no one is willing to pay for it when they can pay a fraction of the cost and still meet their regulatory requirements.

This is such a smart scam, they try a blatantly obvious trick at the top then while you're feeling smart at not falling for it you hit the blue dismiss link and get sent to a phishing site.
It's a scam within a scam.

This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
