Give me prolefeed and doublethink!
I’m about halfway through now.
This copy I happened to buy was printed in 1984 and has a nice afterword by some guy.
I didn’t need this book to tell me any of this, I have been well aware for MANY years. Lol.
But damn, I guess I was unconsciously hoping it wasn’t this bad.
Random unnecessary addition. I noticed a tiny book store half a block from me. I am going there tomorrow to hopefully find a bunch of banned/ungoodthink books.
You didn't need that book to tell you any of this...but perhaps if the world had listened to Orwell in 1949, all of us would only read dystopian fiction for fun, not for strategies to handle the next 30 years.
Fact is, books like
1984 and
Fahrenheit 451 were warnings in their day, and tales of how we got here now. Ignorance and the majority of 10th graders already shitting on their reading lists instead of approaching them with a ready mind- that's how we got here. So yeah- 1984 reads like an obvious kids tale in 2023, but again...had we just listened to these warnings from brilliant men 70 years ago, what a different world we might have.
Makes me wonder about what "silliness" in fiction is being ignored today, only to be seen as prophetic in 50 years.
EDIT: Oh! and no one reads 1984 and thinks "what a great idea!" Everyone thinks that "if the world would just listen to ME we wouldn't have all these problems!" Path to hell and how its paved, that's all.
