Aren't hospital visits like ridiculously expensive, though? I hear it's pretty common in the US to not go for anything that isn't expressly life-threatening. Even with insurance, every time they pay for it your rates go up.
Not that it's any better here right now. Our provincial government kept cutting resources to medical professionals even into the pandemic. It kept happening until we threw the leader out of office a few months ago. But now we're 152,000 (and climbing) surgeries behind, our ICU is overflowing with antivaxxers, and the underpaid nurses are quitting in droves to move to provinces that offer benefits and better pay.
My cousin has ALS and his lungs are starting to fail. But they can't get a respirator for him because they're all in use.
