He just made it a better kind of weird.

I dunno. I've watched a lot of Holmes on Homes and I don't think it really counts as ego when you realize how shitty and bottom dollar some contractors are. Shoddy workmanship should be mocked and those engaging in it should be made to feel terrible.

He's quite confident, it's true.

Also, for the record though, home inspectors don't generally do all the things he does on a general inspection. If you want his level of investigation you need to hire a very pricey inspector or a general inspection and then specific tradespeople to inspect their specialties (HVAC, electric, plumbing, etc.)

Mike Holmes is THE biggest name in home contracting in Canada.

There are literally groups of home builders who signed on to something called "Holmes Approved Home Builders". Ego is naming your kid after yourself (Hint: Mike Holmes Jr.), but he has incredibly high standards when it comes to home building. "Do it right the first time, and you won't have to do it again later" is kind of the shtick he's been peddling for over 20 years.

Like any other legitimate person in the industry, he's rightfully pissed at people pretending to be contractors who not only lowball intentionally to steal contracts from working professionals, he's rightfully pissed when they prey on the vulnerable, such as widows, grieving parents, new home buyers, etc. He's also helped many people take shoddy contractors to court, or given them a direction in order to do so.

On top of which, he does an immense amount of humanitarian work in Canada and the US. He and his team spent something like 6-7 months in New Orleans alone after Katrina hit.

The next biggest name would be Bryan Beaumler.

Holmes is trying to change that, because a Home inspector is actually trained to look for those things, however they are not trained to, or allowed to, open up any existing wall unless there is a structural issue found. And most of the ones he's had to fix mistakes for, don't even lift up ventilation grates in the air return, or check basics like making sure the visible return pipes are properly sealed.

Which is why he does his own Holmes Inspection™

He was married, got divorced, and now has a long time girlfriend (as of 2016, so things might have changed)

He does look a bit like Chris Pratt though
