I don't really agree with what he is saying, but then again I am having a hard time trying to discern his exact point in the interview. How is he measuring "impact?" Sales? Awards? Influence?
Obviously, nothing that his company has released in the last 3 years has had any "impact" on the industry. Halo 5 had a absolute horrid story and the fans hated it so much that 343i has already said Halo 6 will focus on Master Chief. Meanwhile the Xbox One hasn't had a single game cross over 10m sales other than COD. MS has tried to do story driven and they just fail because they aren't good games (looking right at you Fable Series). Thats not the genre.
If he is trying to say people are more focused on online gaming, that may be true, but that doesn't mean those games aren't story driven. Obviously the big one is Bungie and Destiny, even though it launched with no story they went out of their way to add a lot to the original release. We will see where Bungie takes Destiny 2.
On the other hand I think people were really hyped for the new single player Mass Effect, and its poor reviews were a huge letdown for a lot of people. This is a story driven game that I believe, had they done it right, could have sold 20 million copies easily. So the demand is there for story driven games.
Two GOTY contenders, frontrunners really, Zelda and Persona 5 are story driven (although from what i have heard BOTW kinda falls apart in the end). And we have more on the way in Last of Us 2, God of War, that Days Gone or whatever Sony revealed last year. So I really don't know where Spencer is going with that interview other than...they have no games.
