First time I walked into Whiterun on my current playthrough Vampires already showed up and killed the blacksmith's wife. I think with Dawngaurd installed it is pretty damn near impossible to not lose any NPCs.

I waited all day for the prereqs to do Blood on the Ice, get half way through and apparently Vampires spawned at some point and killed one of the necessary NPCs that was, for some reason, not set as essential.

So yeah, quitting for the day, tomorrow, with Dawnbreaker in hand, I unleash absolute *** hell on Vampires when I start Dawnguard.

I figure it's about time I tried a proper mage class for once.

Edit: Not to go into too much here, but really. Saturday I'm going to sit down with my old man for a man-to-man for the first time at all in eight years and for the first time seriously since 1999. I'm seriously struggbussing and no one except my wife seems to get "why." Even my mom -- who divorced the man 31 years ago -- is like "what's so bad about your dad?"

Sorry, I left work right about this time so couldn't continue our string of Hemingwayisms, but let me tell ya'. My junior year of high school everyone in my class was required to write a term paper on Hemingway in preparation for our senior year, where we did a term paper all on our own on a randomly assigned author, and I hated Hemingway for about 12 years afterward. The Old Man and the Sea was depressing crap. For Whom the Bell Tolls? A Farewell to Arms? C'mon. Tragic melodramatic ***!

...but as I rounded 30 and read some of his stuff again, I sort of found that it made a lot more sense from a man's perspective than from a boy's.

And I actually think it's one of the few bits of pop culture to do that. So much is meant to appeal to the 15-25 male demographic in our society. Meant to sell to angsty, angry boys.

Hemingway was a complicated man full of contradictions that have no answer or response. And the older I get, the more I respect him for it.

I've found that on your first night in Whiterun you must RUN, not walk, to the entrance if you want to save the woman blacksmith.

Otherwise, poor woman is vampire food, as is the cool warrior guy who trains one-hand and gives you a quest about his family sword.

Yeah, wiseass. Even with that figured in.

First time I experienced vampires was in Whiterun but I wasn't expecting them. It was after the curved swords quest so two vampires were killed by two guards and two Alik'ir warriors that appear near the gate.
