If the blade is real Damascus, getting a pattern that tight must've taken a lot of time and work. There's a good chance the 'damascus' pattern is just a finish they put on at the end to prevent rust. One of my swords has the same finish.

One of my swords has the same finish. Yeah, kinda like gun bluing. It looks to have been treated but if you zoom in close (I'm on a phone) you can see the pattern... Which doesn't guarantee it's real Damascus but the pattern is tighter that some other knives. Could be lazer-etched though. Even real Damascus wouldn't be that dark unless treated somehow.

Quote: Pattern welding is the practice in sword and knife making of forming a blade of several metal pieces of differing composition that are forge-welded together and twisted and manipulated to form a pattern. Often called (Modern) Damascus steel, blades forged in this manner often display bands of slightly different patterning along their entire length. These bands can be highlighted for cosmetic purposes by proper polishing or acid etching.

Pattern welding is what I refer to as "real" I don't know if the real, old way of producing Damascus steel is even known.

Apparently we have no idea how Damascus steel was originally made but we discovered carbon fibre nanotubes and ***in it, lol.
You see a lot of people on videos about swords saying steel like that is superior to modern steels and other garbage lol, it's kinda funny

Pattern welding is what I refer to as "real" I don't know if the real, old way of producing Damascus steel is even known. To the best of my knowledge, it isn't. True Damascus was just unusually pure steel for it's time period. And that happened to cause a pattern weld in the process.
Modern steels completely outperform it.

Tired, sore and almost back home, but the trip to Dusseldorf today was totally worth it even though DoKomi isn't really my type of event.

No people saying the steel they used hundreds of years ago (or even a thousand) is better than what we use today, or how their techniques were so much better and created swords better than today
Or how katanas can 'cut through anything' if it's traditionally made in Japan lol

Modern steels completely outperform it. I'd like to make a gun out of some of the pattern welded stuff. Like in the style of a Colt 1851 Richards-Mason conversion.

Nah, he mean people claiming original Damascus stuff is superior to modern steels. You get a lot of katana fanboys claiming ancient Japanese folded steels are superior as well. Same with the crucible steel the Celts and Vikings were making.
It's all a load of crap.

On a Japanese Katana; there are some katana that are forged and treated in the traditional way and they are works of art IMO, but the stuff about them cutting through gun barrels in WWII is a myth. Has to be. No soldier in WWII was issued anything more than a bayonet of some sort and I doubt an officer's mass produced dress sword, while katana-like, was forged like one. Who the hell would bring a priceless relic to the front lines of WWII? ...Aside from Mad Jack.

A lot of our rebar comes from Mexico. I've heard of rebar so bad that when they'd drop a 20 foot rod on the ground, it'd shatter into 3-4 pieces.

When I was a kid, I used to RP in the Yahoo chat rooms. I would get into it and I would play characters that were less... vampirey. One of the characters was a blind retired soldier. Another was a blacksmith and I used to do research (what little research was possible on the internet in 2000) into how to be a blacksmith. A part of me thought it was a noble job and I wanted to try it, but being around all that heat, I feel like I'd hate it. Still, this stuff you're posting is like porn to 14 year old me.
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
