Interesting fact...

No Man's Sky has 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 procedurally generated planets.

Honest question, do any of you think this game is going to be good?

I know that the procedural generation is all done by computers and such, but each planet couldn't possibly be very much different, or at least until you explore every type of planet there is. I'm sure some are going to be some more rare than others.

I just don't see any way to "play" the game, I guess I just kinda need at least some guidance on a path to take. Just my thoughts I guess.

Also, that number is 264.

Quote:
The number of distinct values representable in a single word on a 64-bit processor. Or, the number of values representable in a doubleword on a 32-bit processor. Or, the number of values representable in a quadword on a 16-bit processor, such as the original x86 processors.[4]
The range of a long variable in the Java and C# programming languages.
The range of a Int64 or QWord variable in the Pascal programming language.
The total number of IPv6 addresses generally given to a single LAN or subnet.
One more than the number of grains of rice on a chessboard, according to the old story, where the first square contains one grain of rice and each succeeding square twice as many as the previous square. For this reason the number 264 – 1 is known as the "chess number".

I'd rather have a lower amount with more stuff to do on each planet (and more unique things for each planet)

I'm pretty sure the goal of the game is to discover as many planets as you can. I'm sure there is going to be some type of ranking or w/e too.

I think I remember seeing that the first person to land on a planet can claim it or something along those lines.

A well planned smaller world will give me much more enjoyment than a ridiculously large one with little to do or little story, story is a big part of why I play games even if it's an open world game. Skyrim has a lot of places to visit for example but each one has a small story to it if you look around enough.

Now that is more interesting I think. Just having each planet pick from a pool of traits, and generate that planet. That lets developers focus on traits, enemies, plants and habitat creation.

Also, how does a game like that even "update"? How do you release new traits if the planets are already created? Just change current ones? Wouldn't that be a bit broken? idk.

I am planning on trying it out, I've come to drop expectations in fear of ruining experiences lately though.

The idea of it seems amazing, and I love the idea of space travel.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I just haven't seen enough gameplay to know what I'd actually be doing in a game so infinitely large.

I think the main goal is simply exploration. Personally I'd be fine with just going around and studying the places with that many different worlds.

Not every videogame is played for the same reasons. I also enjoy PES, but certainly not for its story...
