I don't get readers in Japan lol, manga where nothing really happens (slice of life 4-koma type stuff) is really popular but something with a solid story and a pretty good protagonist gets axed after 10-15 chapters
If it isn't moe or echi then it's rare that it can develop a fanbase in japan. I think the koreans do better romance and non slice of life manga (manhwa).
That's why I tend to read more webtoons now, they're all amateurs and they focus on the story and character development because they don't really have to worry as much about selling magazines (they don't get paid much but they also have a lot more freedom).
They take extended breaks if necessary for their health and I've only heard of one or two webtoons that were actually cancelled. One was because the author was always late with chapters and then took a longass time between each one and just kinda gave up but apparently they were given another chance and are now uploading their chapters again (which is good because I like it)
For example the Tower of God guy took a couple months off to let his wrist feel better and he comes out with a new chapter every week now
