I subbed for a few months (thank god they have an option to pay up front for 3 months and no recurring charges after) just so I don't have to bother with the shitty restrictions while I finish up the 'story'. Yes, the free mode is horribly restrictive, but you can still technically get by without all the niceties (also my account is 'preferred, since I paid for it at launch and actually paid for it for a little while) here is a nice little chart from their site that tells you what you can and can't do on free.
