Just bugs me how tools at Oxford acknowledge ridiculous internet lingo as actual words, worthy enough to be put in the dictionary, when they belong only to an isolated atmosphere of communication: the internet.
Perhaps it's spread like a disease enough to the point where we say things like "BRB" and "LOL" in everyday speech.

It annoys me a bit too. A couple of my friends teach, and you would not believe how many students think that it's acceptable to put text/internet speak in assignments.

It's a little odd that so many of you are concerned with dictionaries, definition, and the etiquette of word-dom, when by definition those terms are undeniably words. Whether they are proper or not is up to the individual.

Webster doesn't own my mind.

Replacing a letter with another one in an existing word or compiled acronyms aren't words last time I checked D:

these shitty online terms need to stay out of the english dictionary, they're not words at all, just *** slang.
You realize that slang and dialects is how languages evolve? That is how languages like English grow and develope from Old English which is borderline undecipherable.
This + the internet is becoming such a huge part of every day life for a growing number of people each year. Things like this become common speech for millions of people used every day. It's not hard to beleive that they would make them a word defined in the english dictionary.

Like Urial said, it's evolution before our very eyes. And its only right and proper to partake in such.

I find that obnoxious! How do people take you seriously?

It kind of bugs me that you think you're so learned that you can criticize others so easily and decide for yourself and everyone else that this kind of language is "ridiculous"... Who are you to decide? What have you contributed to the english language? What makes you the expert you seem to think you are?

Whatever. I can't help but find it unprofessional and silly.
It's a language derived of anonymity and laziness through telecommunications.
I'd hate to see the day were things like "lol" or "sammich" get accepted or are overlooked in resumes or essays for academic or career purposes.

I'm not really criticizing anything other than the ridiculous nature of unprofessional "words" being put into a professional and defined environment. But if you want to attack an aspect of my argument that was never present in the first place, go for it.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm not going around saying "O-M-G", but I will mutter it. And "idgaf" I say sometimes.

"brb" is another one that I'll say casually.

I don't use it in front of my boss or anything, either, just knowing my audience.

But honestly, I believe I should be able to regardless.

Sorry but that's elitism bred from convention. I find it odd that people take pride in conforming to what other people have deemed "standards".

For instance: grammar. Yes, grammar serves a purpose and should be utilized in order to increase coherency.

But then you got people that will flame the *** out of others for using "you're" instead of "your".

That's asininely pretentious, and I scoff at those people probably in much the same way you scoff at the receptionist.

Grass is always greener, it seems.

It may come off elitist, but I'm with Art on this. There's no place for this in a professional environment. Would you like to meet our receptionist? Five minutes with her, and I'm sure you would be thoroughly annoyed.

I'd argue it's moreso devolution than evolution. I'm guilty of using some internet speak on the web, but never in real life conversation and never in anything serious.

Why would you want to make fun of anyone in your office? If we're talking about professionalism and such then that is by far less professional than using OMG or BRB. I mean seriously people here sit on the internet daily while their supposed to be working and no one seems to care about that but watch out for the internet speaks! if she talking to a customer like that then there is a problem but if its just around the office with peers then who cares.

It's only professional because other people say it is.

Do you or have you ever seen a cartoon called "Rugrats"? One of the best episodes is one in which the toddler, Angelica, overhears her mother saying a "bad word". Angelica repeats it and is scolded. Tommy and his crew of babies overhear the adults calling the word "bad" and their expressions sum up my feelings completely.

They stared with looks of terror in their eyes until one of them said "How can words be bad?"

I used to take a similar stance when I was younger, but the only thing that makes a word bad or professional or any other adjective that pertains to it is definition and context.
