Edit: With very fast (dual ported) video memory the Mega Drive could update what was on the screen without have to wait for the end of the travel of the CRT raster beam (blanking) phase of the video.
Because it could write and read the video memory at the same time some idiot at SEGA of America thought of a "moniker" for a advertising campaign: "Blast Processing". Rest is history.
