It wasn't maxing out my CPU but it was taking up a ***load of memory. I fixed mine by simply disabling windows update. Now the service doesn't load and I just do windows update manually. Which doesn't cause the massive memory drain.
For some reason, manually installing the latest "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP" fixed it so the rest of the autoupdate could happen. So far, I've been able to update it just fine now and cpu is idle. I didn't have that memory issue you had.
Windows Update be weird yo. The strangest of things make it go nuts on resources.
I think mine was failing some security update as well. Though when I did it all manually it succeeded. So I guess it became stuck in a constant loop of querying the server trying to get that update.

Things seem to load a lot faster now. Didn't realize that bug hampered my system so much. :)
Holy crap! So much Gundam Wing love in today's Build Fighters! That custom Epyon was awesome, and I'm hoping that Aries showing up will promote interest in a HG kit for it. >_>; <_<; Heavyarms did pretty well too, considering it wasn't destroyed instantly. :I

Now I can play games again on my PC. :D nvm read, yeah I always rocked with auto updates off on XP, I find it better to schedule updates anyway, that way you can schedule a system restore beforehand, and if something breaks not only you know what caused it, you can easily fix it.
