Everyone knows a female character in MMO`s has to be half naked, pretty sure its in the MMO rulebook somewhere lol
Not my personal view, just seems to be a trend.
It's a bit more than that.
Most men in video games are large, hard bodied, muscular and brave, while most women are portrayed as soft bodied, half naked / tight clothing (or both), with large breasts most of the time. They're also frequently displayed as objects in need of protection, and the man has to come save her, where men are usually given great power, determination, and strength to overcome everything.
Not all games do this, thankfully, but the majority of them
that I see being advertised at least take part in some of it. It really depends on the genre of the game most of the time, but it doesn't have to be the case.
60% of gamers (on consoles) are men. Well, it really depends on what console you're talking about.
For women it goes: PS3 [9%], Xbox 360 [11%], Wii [80%].
For men it goes: PS3 [21%], Xbox 360 [38%], Wii [41%].
Software Sales:
Consoles: 76.36%
PC: 23.64%
PS3 has sold 77 million units, Xbox 360 77.2 million, and Wii 99.84 million.
48% of games are rated for everyone, 12% are rated for everyone 10 and over, 23% are rated for teen and over, and 17% are rated mature.
So, games where women could be dressed half naked is around 40%, probably closer to 15-25%.
So, if you're looking at all the genres including family friendly then you'll see that it isn't the case. I think advertising is to blame as to why we think most women are dressed inappropriately in games. Not all games advertise a great deal, but the ones that do have to put out material that will bring people in. This includes targeting men by displaying women characters dressed in less clothing that's probably tighter than it should be.
There are still plenty of games that break the stereotype, but they might not be as successful as the ones that use them to their advantage.
