I think death is a pretty fair limit of duration to capitalize on your own works. While I can understand passing rights on for your family and future generations therein (royalties etc.), I think it's pretty lame for larger corporations to constantly extend their rights to your works well beyond your passing and/or the disbanding of said group.

it might be lame but that's only because your not in that line of work, while it does suck that the larger corp. as a whole will far exceed it's profit margin off a good product it's their property they own it just like you would own a house or any other property and how can anyone say just because someone that is the original owner is out of the picture, this item should be free, nothing in life is free i personally think copy write laws aren't strict enough. if i create and market any product no one should be allowed to use, rehash or change my product w/o permission of the lawful owner. It's actually your line of thought process that grinds my gears. I'm still not entirely sure what your point of the copy write is that bothers you. Are you asking for free permission to use or obtain said products?

When you're dead and gone, yes.

Cool let me know when your parents die so i can come take their house for my family for free as they wont be needing it. Or when it's been 28 years since the purchased it. I'm sure they've had plenty of comfort by then.

I'm talking about copyright ownership, to works of media. Not houses and cars lol.
If you're dead, people should have the ability to use your works as they please. Whether it's for a movie soundtrack in the future, or making a godawful anime music video on youtube. I shouldn't have the RIAA knocking on my door for using your song after you've been dead IMO.

Alright. I guess that's where we agree to disagree then.
I think intellectual property and rights to written works (be it film, music, literature or otherwise) should be public domain after the said author has since passed.
Also I think public domain is often mistaken as a manner of exploiting capital on someone else's work. It merely is a means to access or use works and build upon them at the will of others.

i know what your talking about, the problem to me lies in your thought process. You actually think it's unfair you have to pay for a dead mans music or to obtain his movie. Or even to remake his product. The only dif i see between my points and yours is you use the word copy write. Making a song cost alot of money, yes most people make their money back in turn if it was worth putting the money into making the product for bulk dist. I however feel you as a consumer should have no right to decide it's unfair that say john lennon is dead so you should be able to use "his" creations for your homemade movie or be able to download his entire works for free. I'm sorry but i just can't turn away from seeing it being the same as someone who worked hard for a house then 28 years later someone says you've lived here long enough i dont care if you built it foundation up you have to move. Oh and btw this internet browser kid gets it for free.

So since the person who wrote the deed to your house is obviously dead by now (edit: assuming you live in an older house), your deed should be public domain?

How are written works of media under copyright protection still being mistaken for houses and cars?

how is it not?
quick edit: but their are laws that protect ownership for almost all things why should a song i create be allowed to be public property just because i die?

I think people have a hard time thinknig of intellectual and physical property as the same thing in terms of ownership. If it even is...

I'm talking about after death. Not the 1700s standard twenty eight years. And created works of media that were previously under copyright, not physical property.

your not understanding though that the product continues to pass down it's always owned. Which in turn means you still wanna be able to take it away from someone else at no charge.

I wouldn't have such a problem with it if the rights and monetary royalties were passed down to your family and future generations therein. But a majority of the time, it's record labels, publishers and filming industries that keep your money posthumous.

it's whoever owns the rights, 9 out of 10 times it's the people that paid you to create said product and also the same people that flipped the 250 thousand or so dollars to create a somewhat cheap cd. films are a ton more expensive and so are books. unless your dumb you and your family always have a small entitlement to royalties far into the future, i know my personal contract states that whoever i pass royalties down to so long as my music continues to create profit (which it already doesn't) they will in turn be sent a monthly check. Yes my children could sell those royalties, and yes no matter what the label i recorded under will always profit from it, i just can't see you saying when i die the royalties should die too.

Perhaps I'm thinking a bit too radically, but in my opinion, intellectual property of created works ceases when the author/creator of said works passes away. What potential motivation to capital or future works is there from beyond the grave? Copyright is protection from infringement of others using your works without consent. Why exactly should that extend beyond your lifetime? I just think that's silly. Should record companies hire a medium to ask your ghostly spirit if it's alright someone uses your music in their own works?

solution
Unfortunately having children won't alleviate your problem, nosy neighbor Nancy and your giant panty granny will stick their big old fat heads into the delivery room and ask if you are ready to have another one yet, while you are mid delivery.
It's one of those misery loves company things.
The secret to getting everyone off your back is converting to evil... <thunder clap>
Yes, your problem is that you are too nice. Soon they will wear you down so far you will start mimicking them to your husband.... "Maybe we should start having children....hmmmmmmmmm"
Since I converted to evil I don't have to put up with any of that nonsense. No more guilt trips or unnecessary holiday travel either. It's quite liberating. Here then are some helpful replies to the age old question of when are you going to have (more) children?
(Keeping in mind that lying is permitted, now that you are evil.)
"I can't, I'll loose my job at the strip club"
"We have been thinking a lot about converting to satanism"
"Right after I kick this terrible heroin habit"
"Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww, we would have to have sex, yuck!"
"We've been trying, but I don't know how much more of it I can swallow"
"I can't, I have cancer and I am dying."
"You turned me gay talking about it"
"I hate children... and old people"
"We're infertile/ My hubby shoots blanks/ He lost his nuts in the war"
"I've been afraid too ever since I made that deal with Rumplestiltskin."
Remember, if it gets too deep you can lie and tell people you were just preparing for a role in a play, or drunk at the time.
Some people believe it is their christian duty to peer pressure you into having more children to alleviate their own guilt for having too few so throwing it back n their faces also works..."It's never too late grandma, didn't you see in the news where the <insert grandma's current age here> granny had those triplets!?!"
What grinds my gears is unsupervised teenagers driving around in a van solving mysteries. I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling kids.

A house a book a child even, these are your workings and should be considered the same as physical property. To me you just come off sounding cheap, like ***why should i have to pay for a well i dont know a john wayne album or something that guys dead he doesn't need the money.

The way it is now the creator of the intellectual property is not the owner of it especially when it comes to media...
Well, what grinds your gears? :P (Go go Family Guy reference!)
