I live in a ridiculously white safe neighborhood and I clear my house like it belonged to some Muj at least one night a week because I hear something.
Muj?
Islam extremest/insurgent/Joe random citizen of either Arab country occupied by the US military.

Hope he's been trained in house clearing. If I break in a house and see the muzzle of a shotgun coming around the corner, pretty sure I'm not the one getting injured in that encounter.

A couple months ago my house was being scoped out by a van parked next to my driveway, lights off/engine off, at 2am. I live about 8 miles out from the city, in the woods, and the 4 houses around me had been broken into all within the last 2 weeks.

When I saw the van (I'm a bit of a night owl.. yay 3am bedtimes..) I pulled my shotgun out of the closet, turned on my light, walked to the window and waved at them with it in my hand.

It took them about 5 seconds before they started the van and went speeding down the road as fast as they could. Found out a couple days later from one of my friends who's a detective that they were picked up by police that night because they went speeding right passed a cop, and were caught with stolen property from my neighbors.

I probably shouldn't mention this at all, but I heard one of those cantankerous right-wing/libertarian talk show hosts ask something to the effect, "If you're against the ownership of guns would you be willing to post a sign outside your home stating that there are no guns on the premises?"
Why not if you believe so whole-heartedly in it?
Because that doesn't promote the cause? Now if they had a sign that said something like "I'm against ownership of guns" It would sound better (still pretty much convey that you have no guns in the house). This guy is just trying to provoke people into a situation where they say no that would be like inviting someone to rob my house! (which isn't necassarily what it is doing)

Do you put a sign up in front of your house for everything you believe? Would you? Would a politician that cheats on his wife put a sign up in front of his house that says "I believe I should be able to stick my *** where ever I want to even though I'm married!" then ask for your vote in 2012? Its a silly thing to say imo.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone does put the sign up and they get robbed and assaulted then sue the guy arguing that they never would have put it up if it wasn't for that guy! lol...

I don't think it's silly at all. I am not a sign in my yard kind of guy, but there's tons of people that are. Pro life, pro choice, whatever NFL team, US Flags, other country's flags, blue star moms, boy scouts, political affiliation, I love my [whatever breed of dog] are all pretty common signs/stickers in windows.

If it is something that you feel strongly about or want to share with the world in general, really, why wouldn't you?

Probably the more serious question for people who are anti-gun (in general) would be: "If a sign was placed in your yard stating that there were no guns in your house, would you feel safer at home? Less safe? No change?"

LOL! I don't see the difference. "Put your money where your mouth is," is what I have to say about that.

I made no claims of being tough. I do however, have a shotgun for home defense. I feel it serves the purpose better than a carbine or a handgun. Your opinion may differ.

Shotgun will put someone down for sure, but a shotgun is more prone to misfeeds and the like even in perfect condition which, let's face it, most home shotguns are not.

It will also wreck your house if you're using buckshot but assuming you aren't and you're using slug, then you have to hit the guy which again isn't a problem for some of us but for many it is.

My gf, I tell her to use the shotgun and it's loaded with buckshot.

Myself, I use a 1911 or a Sig.

I would argue double-barrel one shot / one slug would be optimum, but I use a 16 rnd CZ, so really we're on the same page.

I owned a Benelli M4 for 3 years. Put a couple thousand shells through it. I never had a jam. I've never had a jam with my Remington 870 either, but have only used it a couple times.

My 930 goes boom every time I pull the trigger, gets shot and cleaned at least once a month. If it fails, an old k-mart SxS also goes boom every time, and it's a loaded wall hanger in the same room designated as shelter in place. 00 buck in both, only. Last worry on my mind if I actually have to use it is what it's going to do to my sheetrock, but I know it's going to hit whoever is on the other side that isn't supposed to be there, if it needs to.

Whatever works for you is great. But yeah, still hope you've had some training in house clearing. It's pretty easy to give away your position if you don't know what you're doing.

In non trained home defence situations, a shotgun would probably be the best bet. Nerves would get to the defender and aim wouldn't be up to par. A shotgun, even at point blank, would make up for most of that.

Who cares if it wrecks the house a bit? That's what home owner's insurance is for ^^ They'll bleed everywhere too, causing need for home repair at that locale any ways.

Use bird shot instead of buck shot, especially if you like live in an apartment or something.. Lessens the chance that innocent by standers will be hit by it.. Would also limit the damage caused.

If you live in an apartment, a rock-salt shot is better then birdshot. (assuming you want to drop down into the less then lethal category.) Birdshot can still go through drywall like apartments.

Nevermind I retract that statement

Quote:
Birdshot as a Defense Load
I have had a lot of questions, summed up as follows: How effective is birdshot (#4, #6, #8, etc.) as a defense load?

We have done tests with various birdshot loads. Birdshot penetrated through two pieces of drywall (representing one wall) and was stopped in the paper on the front of the second wall. The problem with birdshot is that it does not penetrate enough to be effective as a defense round. Birdshot is designed to bring down little birds.

A policeman told of seeing a guy shot at close range with a load of 12 gauge birdshot, and was not even knocked down. He was still walking around when the EMTs got there. It was an ugly, shallow wound, but did not STOP the guy. And that is what we want... to STOP the bad guy from whatever he is doing. To do this, you must have a load that will reach the vitals of the bad guy. Birdshot will not do this.

In fact, tests have shown that even #4 Buckshot lacks the necessary penetration to reach the vital organs. Only 0 Buck, 00 Buck, and 000 Buck penetrate enough to reach the vital organs.

Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job.

Would still hurt like hell, but if someone was really intent on causing you harm, birdshot wouldn't guarantee it would take them down.

As for the apartment thing it wasn't because birdshot can't/won't go through drywall, just that most of it's power would be lost by the time it went through the wall.

Just what I want, a CA or grand jury trying to decide whether to bring charges against the guy who shot a criminal with a less than lethal handload filled with salt and pepper... Lets indict this guy cause he seems kinda crazy.

I think I'll stick to my factory Federal 00 buck.

While you're at it, throw in some paprika, thyme, oregano, black pepper, onion powder and garlic powder, then you can shoot your food and get that deep saturation of flavor.. You'll season and tenderize the meat all at the same time.

I've fired quite a few shotguns, most were 870's meant for breaching, the rest mixed between dif. models of 870's, benelli's and mossbergs. Some never had issues, others would misfeed quite often. A lot of times the springs that are used are crap and replacement springs aren't quite correct for the gun either. Had the least amount of issues when breaching, but those were all meant for tactical use and smithed by our gunsmith.

I hope so. People with the mentality of "I don't like X so nobody else should be able to have them." are very annoying.

Rights are unconditional.

Edit: While I do think that anyone who chooses the responsibility to own a firearm should take training for their own personal safety and the safety of others around them, I don't believe it should be mandatory.

I figured their ignorance and fear of guns encouraged them run down to the firing range to give it a shot. Then they ended up having one of those "accidents" that they always cry about.

Every time I'm at the range, I watch all of the guns on the line to see which of them is that mythical gun that jumps up on its own and shoots someone in the face. It hasn't happened yet. I am disappoint.
