We ate crap like hamburger helper ramen rice roni etc all the time. We lived in the cheapest places we could find and/or got roomates. I got all my clothes at the good will. Which also happened to be most of my bday and christmas presents.

My whole point for anyone who even remotely understands economics, is the minimum wage hasn't even come close to keeping up with inflation.

Sure you can live within some shitty means. But working 40hrs a week, riding a bike or walking 10 miles to work. Just to have a tin roof a bucket of water and some table scraps, isn't living.

$15,080 before taxes, - about 10k in housing(and electric bill etc), 3.5k in food, plus travel expenses, you're left with ***, what if somebody gets sick, your car breaks down, minimum wage doesn't cover the cost of living for ***. Also that's assuming you get 40 hours/week.
At worst yes. Most places are a bit high. Live somewhere cheaper. Spend less on food bills etc. It's actually rather easy if you are willing to get some crappy small place and not eat cheap.
no, at least buddy. Cheap rent around here is 550, average 800, + electric, you're looking at almost a grand a month, working 40 hours a week at 8.5 i pull almost 1100, you try to cover the cost of a car and food on that, it just can't be done. I wouldn't imagine working for minimum wage, it's well below the cost of living, so get over your deluded self.
Jesus why the hell are you paying so much for electric? Also go for cheap and save 250. I'm not really trying to save but I'm at about $200 a month of food. I could go as low as $100 if I wanted to do the sandwich and ramen diet lol

Public transport, walking, biking has already been suggested. I used to ride my bike a good 6 miles to work. But that's more because I refuse to get a car lol.

public transportation here sucks ***, and doesn't run 24/7/365

because we have a monopoly on the utility and we pay what they tell us to pay.
So average rent being 700(going cheap) electric random from 80-180 (depending on season) + food, + transportation expenses, I'm way over budget, I'm sorry but your ideas of minimum living are way too minimum, people can't survive for long periods of time on that, + medical expenses.

It really is cheaper to use public transportation or just walk/bike ride.
Do people really not understand that not every place has public transportation?

If you live in a place with public transportation, it's generally more expensive. You know taxes?

yes and the cost of living in the 80's and 90's was a lot lower than it is today, minimum wage hasn't kept up.

we made due with just that in the early 20th century, even less before that.
too many pampered couch potatos.
which could inversely be related as to why people have to work themselves to the bone.

you'd have people crying about prejudice for something like that.
household profit assessment(which could be slipped into the welfare agreement on its own) would make a bigger difference.
if they appear to have more net worth than profit somethings up, then they lose benefits.

Ive gotten no help from the job centre trying to find a job neither, they asked me
"So what sort of job are you interested in finding? whats your area of expertise?"
Me: Top of the list? Animator, thats the one thing i really want to do.
Them: "Ehm, how about we put that as the least important thing, since its not likely to happen, its a bit farfetch'd, lets put retail as your number 1 job"
Now dont get me wrong, i know animation is hard to get into. But why *** ask me if they arent going to put it top of the list? -_-; They dont even go throw a list of possible jobs when im there. So in protest, ive started takin the utter piss. I need to fill out these forms about what i do to find work. What i did/date/what happened/what im going to do next. One entry a few weeks ago:

What I did: Pretended to be a Christian and applied to Bethany Christian Church to be an aid worker; failed.
Date: 15/9/10
What happened: Nothing.
What im going to do next: Be more serious/try harder.

Increasing the min wage will speed up inflation as well. Of course the US could do with bumping that thing up. In Canada (ontario) min wage is 10.70$ CAD ~ atm and raising. In the mean time tho you need to work with it.

Lol most places don't run 24/7. Mostly cause that is rarely needed.

There is always conserving power. I personally don't use heat most the time and just snuggle up :). Turn lights off etc. Even in a 5 bedroom house I can keep it under $50 between gas and electic depending mostly on how much cooking I'm doing.

You did say previously cheap housing is 550... probably really crappy places cheaper but lets stick with your 550.

I guess I just grew up living with crap. Including not seeing a doc from age 5 to 18 lol
