It depends who you're talking to. Most people will elaborate, at least the ones I talk to do.
I love to start friendly, polite small talk with people who I know dont enjoy my company and then see how long I can waste their time.
Other than that, I'd rather talk about something of substance with strangers. Even if we have no common ground on the subject. Only problem is that you can never tell who is going to be incapable of reasoned debate until it's far too late. I'll admit I use that question when I don't feel like having a conversation because I'm sure I'll get that answer. If I do, I'll say something like 'What have you been up to?' or pick up something from the last conversation with said person. Asking the wrong person "How are you" and you will stand there listening to their aches, their problems with the wife, work suck, little john got a cold etc etc, until you either find a really good excuse to gtfo (or stab him/her really hard)

I absolutely hate people who start a conversation like this, but it's not even a conversation... most-- and I mean MOST -- messages on any form of messenger ends with "i'm good you?" "I'm good" and that's it on the IM message... nothing else. If a person really wants to talk to me that badly and know whats up they should seriously have something better to say then just "Hi how are you" or "Hi whats up" cause you know for a fact that conversation isn't going any further then that. I personally only IM people when I have something that holds some type of importance to say, anyone who IMs me with nothing but "Whats up" is just ruining my valuable playtime. :) That's why I avoid logging on to AIM because I get flooded with that crap. The message stayed each time I clicked a new persons PM button I'll be honest to people. I ask "What do you want" whenever someone just says "hi." I know people, and they know me. Only reason anyone talks to me is if they want something except a select few here.
