I am looking at the advice here, and I can't understand half of what is said, so I think I am probably going to go with a pre-built.

I am sure that I could put everything together if I had all the pieces, but I have no idea what pieces I need in the first place.

Ok, with a little bit of homework, you can spare yourself a headache.

For exsperience the main things you want to look at are Processor, Graphics Card, and Ram. When buying a perbuilt you come across the issue of the choices you have only have one good thing out of those three things I listed above. In what I have seen is that prebuilts usally lack or over charge if it has a dedicated graphics card in it since they add a laor charge to snap it in. So buing a prebuilt machine at a better price that has decent ram and a good processor is the way to go and plug in a graphics card yourself. You will save money that way.

This sounds like the best bet for me. could I walk into best buy, for example, and walk out with everything I needed, or am I going to have to go to a couple different places?

I would really suggest building your own... People aren't joking when they say its REALLY easy. I built one last year that pwns 11 and the hardest thing was connecting/sorting the case wiring to the motherboard.

That being said if that's a bit too intimidating for you you can buy processor/motherboard/case combos already installed. so all you have to do is get the rest. I would seriously recommend going this route as if you're already playing on a PC, you can reuse (and save money on) the existing hard drive, DVD player, and power supply (maybe).

Seriously its easier than you'd think.

A lot of the plugs/sockets are colour coded (orange plug goes into orange slot, etc).

For practice, tear open your old pc, then you can see how things look.

Building isn't hard. Don't be scared of being a little rough either. not nuts, but components have a habit of being stiff.

Pretty much this.

I'm not an Alienware fan, it tends to be cheapish hardware that you spend WAY too much on.

if you are looking for the best price on a computer go to www.pricewatch.com that place is awesome for finding the perfect price for anything "computer wise" you need :)..and as far as being able to play ffxiv you don't really need the best of the best..but a moderate computer at least a dual core processor and a decent video card 512mb ram at least ati hd series..and you should be good

Most Expensive Laptop (Cost: $1 million)

Luvaglio Laptop
You think Apple makes one of the priciest laptops? Read this. In 2007, luxury manufacturer Luvaglio London announced that it will release by special order the most expensive laptop ever sold, with a price tag of a million dollars. Though the system’s full details are not available, reports say that the laptop has a 17-inch widescreen LED lit screen, a Blu-ray drive, 128GB memory, an integrated cleaning device, and a diamond power button that doubles as the laptop security feature. In 2005, the Dutch company Ego Lifestyle BV released the Tulip E-Go Diamond laptop, which previously held the world’s most expensive laptop title. The notebook has over 80 total carats of diamonds and retailed for $355,000.

I just bought a sick laptop for school that can run games pretty decently actually, only cost like $1000, but that includes OS and office! The laptop itself cost about $850 CAN, after tax.

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/samsung-samsung-15-6-intel-core-i3-330m-2-13ghz-laptop-r580-red-r580/10142387.aspx?path=31958a11bf325a2f902131cbcaca10f9en02

It is simply awesome! A humongous bang for your buck. I dunno if I'll be able to play any MMO's during the school year but I'll benchmark FFXIV on this laptop for you guys that are interested.

Might as well take it back if you've had it less than 30days lol :p

I hope you're not one of those people that plays games on their laptops in bed, causing it to overheat, then wonder why it's broken.

Contrasting the hundred idiots in this thread.

This laptop got me a 2500 with no upgrades, and it costs less than 700 dollars.

It's not the best laptop ever but it's definitely enough to play FFXIV on high settings, as well as any other game you ever want to play.

Um, no I'm not bed is sleeping not gaming... and I'm pretty sure i said it was for school.
Just because you're one of those people who like to build their own computers doesn't mean you know everything ;o
