as long as you’re not a *** about it

but what if you are a jerk that's always a *** about everything!?
That's just good business practices.

not in my particular case...I've lost sales occasionally because I was unable to overcome my natural tendency to be a ***...

and then if I do lose I get all... vendetta~y...
If you exact revenge, their successor may be more willing to work with you.

It's brilliant!

I'm actually surprised sometimes there aren't more folks that dislike me for the answers I give.

their minds wander off as soon as you say no and/or they don't understand what you are explaining and

PARKER knock it off! goddamn that ***is depressing..
I find that as long as you’re not a *** about it and explain it most people just let it go...

stuff

The problem with that approach is whoever tells them no is automatically the bad guy.

"I can send development an email"

cc them and let the devs crush their dreams.
I've actually done that a couple times. Surprisingly even without that they never consider me a bad guy... that I know of?

I'd be flung off that cliff so fast...

my least favorite part was trying to explain why certain people can't have access to certain things... for some reason the statement "because you are a moron" is completely unacceptable regardless of the truth behind it...

I tried explaining the intricacies a few times before I realized that if they were smart enough to understand why they can't do what they tried to do they never would have tried to do it in the first place and we wouldn't be having this talk.

no see you can't change that info in the database just because the customer calls and asks you to... you have to go through the proper channels for these fourteen well articulated reasons.... etc.

I gave up and shortened it to....
it's corporate policy

yeah those bigwigs down at corporate...they won't let us do anything...
Yep. Same thing I have to tell people around here who want certain features added to our systems.

"No, we can't give you guys that power because within a week the data would be *** and you'd all do something we're not supposed to do."

Well can you give us X or Y

See above answer.

Well can you at least grab us X or Y item from the system?

"No, that data either isn't saved or isn't allowed to be used by our team. Why? Well because I bet you guys would end up giving out information to the wrong people... or better yet the wrong information to the correct people..."

Well why don't we have X, it falls within the parameters we can use...

"Well, do you have money to pay for that enhancement? No? Then the developers aren't going to work on it. They have higher priority projects that are actually funded."

What boggles my mind more is these are people who have to reference and manipulate data on a daily basis but it seems like they have 0 skill in it.

Like, how do they still have a job?

I going to make a recommendation that will probably earn me little more than a devastating kick in the balls... but here goes...

SQL

you mentioned access in an earlier post and I enjoy the functionality of it and I have used it for many many years...but there are just so many security flaws and ways for people to *** ***right up. intentionally...unintentionally...accidentally

it's like one of those embodiments of Murphy's Law

with SQL you can strictly limit what each individual dipshit can see/read/modify etc. that way you lessen the amount of information... that would only confuse them anyways.
I use SQL queries pretty often, as does the team I'm working with on this current project. The problem being that I don't have access to the backend data for the particular database they're using so I have no way to directly query. Our security team also won't allow me to get access to that information because of how sensitive it is.

Basically, I could make this process a whole lot faster if I had more accesses but I can't get more accesses because of company practices. Also for Access it was just a personal database to speed up a material assigning process for newly created packages, so the only person who could have screwed up that data was myself. :x
