Yeah I was just thinking the same thing...friggin rotary dial telephones and telephone exchanges... asking an operator to connect you... pay phones....collect calls.
my penny-pinching family had a system. When I needed picked up from wherever I was, instead of calling to say I was ready to go, I was to call, let the phone ring twice, then hang up and get the coin back, then do it again.

I know most of the phone numbers from my childhood/teenage years by heart from before everyone had a cell phone.
I always memorized phone numbers by the dial patterns though, so everyone I knew had their own pattern and I couldn't remember the number without a dialpad in front of me half the time. |
