I think during 90s computers and internet started to become popular. That by itself made that decade a huge improvement in terms of information availability.

Personally i never had a mega drive (i was in the ”SNES team”...) in life and always loved Sonic. Just managed to play it when emulators started to be available in many site.

Aside many others things that came with internet like comics, vids, early social medias, etc. and at that point everything were new and we hadnt so many shits like nowaday.
