i jsut upgraded my graphics driver for my gtx 970 to 388.00 and im having instabitly issues with ffxi since then.
I did i yesterday evening. and ive had 4 crashes of FFXI so far.

I'm going to look into it tonight so this post serves both as a caution and as suggestions thread.

Do you remember what driver you were using before you upgraded? you could uninstall the new one and see if the old one does the same thing to test to see if it's the new driver or not.

I highly recommend you start using DGVoodoo then, it will solve all of your problems.

Download WIP35 here (that's the version I'm using, I don't know about the recent ones) :
http://dege.fw.hu/temp/dgVoodooWIP35.zip

inside DGvoodoo\MS\ copy d3d8.dll into your
PlayOnline\SquareEnix\playonlineviewer folder

download D3DCompiler_47 here
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/D3DCompiler_47.zip

unzip and copy the file into c:\windows\syswow64
or c:\windows\system32 if you're running Windows 7 32Bits

(if it's already there, go to next step.)

Run the game as usual with windower.

No more crash, better graphics, better performance.
(things like crashing when CTRL+ALT+DEL, FFXI stopped responding etc.. will be gone)

Here's the original thread you might have missed 4 months ago

Anyway i had not crashes since my first post. it might have been due to fishing (seem to be some infor floating around about a fishing bug).
Im running perfect on 388 drivers now

I'll look into dgvoodoo for the graphics.

Sorry, necro bump, but this thread just fixed my issues with a nvidia 1050 Ti card and hoping it might help someone else.

Nvidia would not run FFXI (probably a throw back to the optimus issues) even with legacy components and directplay enabled. Nvidia support was useless in helping with the situation and just blamed FFXI. The onboard card only would run FFXI. Upon disabling the onboard card, windower could not boot to POL without crashing (no error or anything, just window would close, no crash report).

Before making a post here I was going through some threads and came across this one. I've heard good things about dgvoodoo and decided to give what Neufko posted above a shot and it worked like a charm. I think POL boots with onboard graphics but then switches to nvidia when FFXI launches. Frame rate skyrocketed. If anyone else is having issues with their GPU, I'd give dgvoodoo a shot.
