Staying Safe

As I browse the forums of FFXIAH.com I'm starting to notice more and more "I got hacked" threads and it makes me all the more uneasy. So I turn to anyone with tech savvy advice and tips to keep us lesser computer keen folks more safe and steered away from potential dangers such as viruses, keyloggers, hackers, etc.

So far I can only recommend (due to that it's all I have/know):

A safer and updated internet browser such as Firefox.
A must have plug-in for firefox: NoScript.
A functioning and up to date antivirus. (I use AVG)
Software to detect and eliminate ad/spyware.
Updating your password every month or so.
(Although obvious, it needs to be said) Not sharing your account information with anyone.

Thats all I use on your list. Well, still trying out firefox (damn it, forgot to use it again >.>)

get ffxi for ps2 or xbox. I play ps2 which is technically possible to hack, but almost impossible to do since its so much different from a PC that most people dont bother learning to hack it. But yeah dont share info with anyone, even loved ones. Friend of mine broke up with his gf and she nuked his account. I wouldnt have nuked my ex's account if i could, but id sure as hell have fun with it XD

I went from ps2 to pc to xbox and i still play on all 3 so i guess im as wierd

Just out of curiosity, why?
PC performs so much better than both.
Though, I would suppose this is only true if you have a good PC to play on.

I play on ps2 and 360, I tried pc, but its just not my thing.

I play all 3 cause I can use my other account on my ps2, if i feel like i wanna chill ill go on xbox, pc duobox and windower helps me for some events in my opinion. So I play them all in different areas of my place. plus my xbox is hooked up to a projector, i can take my ps2 anywhere with me.

I've heard similar horror stories, so I decided to switch to Firefox. It's a little off topic, but are there any other plugins you'd recommend?

I'd like to recommend the AdBlock Plus plugin for Firefox as well. In addition to making your surfing safer, pages load faster if your PC doesn't have to think much about the ads.
