I saw this a little while ago. While it didn't look like it'd be my favourite game of all time, it does look like something I'd want to pick up one day. Granblue seems to be killing it these days.

Coincidentally, that's one of the things that makes me less interested in the game. (The other thing being the quest system looking like that of a themepark MMO: click on an NPC with a ! over their head, skip the worthless empty dialogue, collect all quests on the map, follow the GPS markers until the checklist splattered on your screen is empty, repeat)

Not that they're particularly established as just one style/genre of game anyway. What's established about the name "Granblue Fantasy" is their world and characters.

Their latest fighting game actually looked really good, too~

False, it has been a turn based RPG for almost 10 years therefor it should never be anything else

FF16

Western themed slop made by Japanese developers, copying western franchise that was popular years ago and overlaying it onto their own well loved franchise. Cause when you buy FF, what you really wanted was GoT!

GranblueFantasy: Relink

JRPG, made by talented and confident Japanese developers who love their own culture and franchise. NOT game of thrones ripoff depression porn, with garbage button mashing combat.

Is what it is.

Action combat can work great, if it's done well and it retains the things people love about the franchise. If you change everything and make western slop, then add poor action combat you're with cheat code rings you're doin it wrong. I'm a huge fan of DmC5 and Neir Automata among many other action combat games. ff16 didn't even take any skill to play, action combat lOl

Granblue Fantasy:relink

1.looks comfy as fk
2.combat legit looks fun
3.combat effects don't cover everything like fireworks
4.awesome uplifting art style
5.big swords
6.kawai as fk characters
7.is an actual jrpg
8.great voice acting, not trying to be a BBC period drama
9.retains most of the features people want like party play
10.upto 4 player online co-op play or solo with party mechanics
11.much booba
12.fantasy characters
13.spiky hair
14.great music

Literally a JRPG.

And it has a battle on an airship vs Bahamut.

Weren't you banned from XIAH (and subsequently let back in for some reason after begging Rooks) for your incessant whining and screaming about things not going your way?

Imagine being this mad, you need to relax bro.

Who's mad? Just stating facts. Like the fact that the same people who have been frothing at the mouth over SE games for the last few years are sucking the slop out of a game that is doing the same thing. It's almost like the entire argument is driven by emotion instead of anything of substance.

I didn't like ff16 as a fan of FF, so what? I'm not a massive fan of GranBlue franchise either, I just thought the game looked fun and so posted a video of it.

Then I lay some intentionally thick banter on you cause you going posted what you did, and then you're going off on one about me being banned lol You need to relax bro, life is too short to take this stuff as seriously as you are.

It wasn't so much about your ban as much as it was a convenient anchor point to establish your historic behavior. You can call it counterbants if you want, idc. End of the day your post right here highlights my point: you hated FF16 as an FF fan, while simultaneously talking up a game from another franchise that you don't have that level of attachment to which is doing very similar things to what is often cited as the Final Fantasy Holocaust. Would you feel the same if you were a Granblue diehard doing your daily bahamut runs and dumping $500 per banner, but never played an FF before 16?

Serious question.

Ultimately I just want you to admit that just because you didn't like something, that doesn't make it bad, cause that's basically been my position for years now.

Imagine being so mad you hold a grudge cause someone said something about a game you kind of liked 6 months ago. I don't even get this mad when someone says something bad about ffxi.

Coming from the guy who can't help but ***talk anything he takes as an attack against his idea of what quality is, that's pretty funny. Anyway, get some new material, you've just said the same thing for the last 3 posts. Unless your strategy was to bore me to death in which case good job you won. You're a literal meme for a reason my guy, just think about that.

Anyway as far as this game goes, I've played around 15hrs so far (got it early) and it has been good. It isn't perfect, lots of flaws. If you aren't invested in the lore you may have trouble establishing a reason to care (it isn't a sequel but there are references that you won't really care about unless you have played Granblue Fantasy). That said it's a good game overall and for most it's at least worth playing if it goes on sale.

I'm really interested in checking it out. These kinds of things can work out well if done right. As I mentioned in the other thread, I actually like the Tales and Y's games and both are ARPGs. So far Granblue looks like it's going to follow those styles of combat.

I downloaded the demo this morning.

You can't reverse the camera controls in the demo. Maybe it's different elsewhere but that really does damper the demo experience. The sidekick/localization was really annoying.

The vibe I originally got off it was single player A-JRPG and then I see things like 2-4 player online co-op or earn rewards for full release of the game. There is a shop for currency?

So this is a $60 live service gatcha or something?

Either way, pass. Glory be to my Unicorn Overlord.

Serious??????

What give you the right to define what belongs to Japanese culture and what is not? Honestly it feels a little cocky..,..

I looked at GB quickly there is nothing inherently more "japanese" than FF16 culture wise. GB is a story that sets in a fantasy world with fantasy races and fantasy names, it is...literally western fantasy inspired world no?

What is so "not Japanese" about Game of throne depression porn if it is made by Japanese dev? Japanese dev aren't allowed to get inspired by a western theme in their stories?

This entire post really reminds me kind of stereotype who thinks about "anime" whenever they talk about Japanese culture. But know nothing beyond that.

Japanese culture is not just "anime", or "jrpg". It is fine to dislike FF16, but you don't get to define what game is Japanese and what is not.

Edit: It is okay to dislike a game. It is not okay to attack the dev. This is what you really like to do.

I 100%ed all levels in the PS5 demo, and had previously played a different ~15-20 minute demo at Pax... and from that, I just don't see what's so special about Relink. FWIW, I've never played the gacha game but I did play a lot of the first Granblue Fantasy Versus fighting game (which is good!), including a lot of the story-based RPG mode.

For Relink, it feels basically like two distinct gameplay styles:

1) Levels that are more like your run of the mill musou game, pretty basic hack and slash with typical light/heavy combo strings and you set a few character specific abilities that are on cooldowns. Computer controls party members.

2) Big enemies/bosses that feel more like a stripped down version of FFXIV raid bosses. You hack away and use your small handful of abilities on cooldowns, you'll get the big red DANGER warning on the ground to get out of the way of major attacks much like XIV. There are some relatively simple ability chains where, once you get your combo meter high enough, you and your partners can take turns stacking your abilities for a big combo attack.

There are also some Monster Hunter elements in taking "quests" from a MH-like job board in town, where you can team up with others (including online) and get transported to the quest area upon accepting. Quite MH like in design, but without the aspect of the targets roaming throughout large levels.

Anyway, it all feels... fine? It's competently made, but kind of generic and basic. There are lots of vibrant saturated colors and overall solid fantasy design, but some disappointing textures and detail (for example, the grass looks awful to me on PS5 in performance mode). The combat doesn't feel very weighty or exciting to me, it's just simplistic button mashing. The story pieces shown in the demos are the most barebones "oh no, orcs have attacked a village and kidnapped people, go free them!" kind of stuff. This isn't Tales of Arise having an in depth "anime RPG" storyline, Relink plot seems more like bland filler to shuffle you along to the next hack and slash mission.

Which is to say, it doesn't look awful, feels to me like a decent time killer and might be fun to hack and slash with friends, but it's far from a complex strategic RPG system and probably kind of forgettable at the end of the day. Perhaps the best part is that there are lots of characters with pretty good designs, but because you only have a handful of character-specific abilities at any given time it feels a lot like the difference between different characters in your typical Dynasty Warriors/musou game.
